Spoilers Star Trek: Discovery 1x01 - "The Vulcan Hello"

This can't be emphasized enough, and it's probably the biggest flaw in the episode, since it's in relation to key actions of the leading character. It's a real doozy of a flaw that can redeemed only by clarifications in upcoming episodes, despite having already jeopardized suspension of disbelief. It makes Burnham seem like she might be psychotic.

 

I'm sure the people behind "Encounter at Farpoint" will take your assessment with great joy and gratitude. Great joy... and gratitude.

.Felt the episode was almost too much of a slow -burn, liked that we get several alien crew , plus the mention of the Klingon Black Fleet, Kai! no obvious canon- crackers, but a couple of places where they dance on the margins and squeeze through cracks, the white doctor's uniform stuck me as a retroactive foreshadowing of TMP's white medical garb and uniform style just as and the thruster suit showing us that tech wasn't born ex nihilo during the NCC-1701's refit. One thing we must keep in mind when considering the look of the 2250's,is that during TOS we are given only a glimpse of a universe through a barely opened curtain, so far Discovery is adding pieces in the shadows formerly outside of our view operating in the penumbra of C&C canon & continuity having viewed only the first hour I'd say they appear to be judicious in how they are filling in those spaces, of course, some of those choices will not please some of use who have been blindly examining this elephant in the dark for fifty years, while our imaginations filed in the details

 

Encounter at Farpoint actually had a plot that went somewhere.

 

Complaining about the Klingons? Meaningless.

Complaining about the "look" and level of technology? Meaningless.

Complaining about lens flares? Meaningless.

Complaining about James Frain as Sarek? Meaningless.

 

Encounter was, mostly, fun to watch.

 

This show felt very much like a product of its time...just as TNG did in 1987. I think that's where I feel regret. 2017 Trek could have put its own aesthetic on a "next generation". Hopefully that day will come. But Discovery reminds me of Rogue One. Entertaining enough, but more or less pointless.

 

I can't remember how did the first part of Farpoint end? I wonder what people would've thought if that was all they got.

But Dr. Crusher buys things in it, which directly contradicts Kirk's statement about the Federation being a moneyless society in Star Trek IV. That took me right out of it, even at the age of seven.

 

This episode got off to a slow start for me. Who thought it was a good idea to begin with an actor ranting in Klingon, then a lot of expository dialogue as they slog through the desert, then some stiff conversation on the Shenzhou bridge? I guess they weren't interested in hanging on to any casual viewers that might be checking out the show. No one but committed Trek fans would have stayed past the first 15 minutes.

When Burnham jetted off in her EVA suit, things started to pick up. The show certainly does look good, and Saru grabbed me from the start. I'm glad he has a sense of humor and isn't just a timid C-3PO. I'm not sure about Burnham yet. Sometimes she seems rather stiff -- I hope that's a deliberate acting choice to show the character's Vulcan upbringing -- and that's hard to reconcile with lines like, "The only appropriate word is... wow!" I really don't like that she's Spock's foster sister. Didn't everybody hate Sybok? Why pull another unknown (half-)sibling out of nowhere?

How could Burnham, "on the edge of Federation space," have a real-time conversation with Sarek's hologram when Captain Kirk will have to wait days to get a reply from Starfleet Command?

The second Klingon scene went on way too long for me. I've already had enough of their language. It gets tedious very quickly. Didn't I read that there are going to be whole episodes devoted to the Klingons? I hope they'll revert to English in those.

So, we'll see. I still wish they had set the series in the future of Star Trek, as far beyond TNG as TNG was beyond TOS, but I'll give the next few episodes a chance and hope for the best.

 

No, sorry. It's not "shit" to me for the sake of being negative. To me, it's shit because this is not my Star Trek. They have absolutely no reverence or respect for established canon yet continue to maintain that this is "Prime" timeline. They have completely disregarded Klingon history, including Klingon-Federation history. The show contains a ship and technology that is far more advanced than even what we have 100 years later.

I could probably write a 10 page summary of everything in this show that contradicts established Trek history, from the uniforms, to the Klingons, to the technology, but I will not do so. Everyone knows this is out of place. All of this could have been avoided without insisting on another prequel. But as it stands, I am not interested in this treatment of the franchise and will not be, and have not, paid a dime to see it.

Criticizing the pace, look and storytelling is entirely reasonable.

None of those were very good.

And the Klingons were, for the most part, a waste of screen time.

 

I have not complained about any of those. In fact, all four of those are great (Klingons, Frain, Look) or non-entities to me (lens flares, whatever).

The plot left a little to be desired. My opinion may be changed on re-watch.

 

The Vulcan Hello wasn't supposed to be "fun"; it was supposed to be action-packed, suspenseful, expository, and interesting, all of which it was.

 

Even if they hadn't I'm still not getting my cable back to watch Discovery on Space-I don't like the way the channel's changed (and I was watching/used to watch Space from the day it launched.)

 

No, everybody hated Star Trek V. Sybok was fine. Plus, I need my pain.
