That said, short of hijacking the thread, the points made about Captain Janeway, she is a generic character. She's androgynous. Troi and Tasha are overly-emotional in "Encounter at Farpoint," Riker has rescued Troi about 3 times by the time Troi is crying on the bridge, telling the Bridge crew what is going on, on the viewer.Tasha is frozen, in the midst of the trial scene, after an emotional display, to which Troi cries "You barbarian!" as Data and Picard get Q to defrost her. Then there's Nurse Chapel, and her obsession with Mr. Spock, there's Jadzia stripping down for our entertainment, and Worf's, in DS9's 6th season. There's the love interest, playing footsie with Picard, of Anij in "Star Trek: Insurrection." There's Ilia and her sexuality and everyone's, including Sulu's, admiration of her because she's sexy and a tremendous lover. There's Carol Marcus's bra and panties scene in Into Darkness, there's Uhura's bra and panties scene in '09, there's the cut-away of the uniforms of the Duras sisters to reveal cleavage (and leave them vulnerable to any knives or bat'leths in the armor, there's the story Ira Steven Behr tells about why he left Next Gen after the third season (Get the Captain laid). There's the redesign of the makeup of Trills to not "ruin Terry Farrell's looks." There's the fact the only sexism storylines are done as comic relief in DS9. I think I did go on.

Jayla is awesome, and the character we have always wanted.

With respect I feel like the TNG/VOY era is a lot better than that gives credit to. How is Janeway androgynous or generic? She had a husband back home to get back to at first and later has her holodeck romances and a little Chakotay on the side. Tasha is frozen because she attempts to defend the crew and and throw down with a godlike entity. Picard's love interest in Lessons who does not want his protection and leaves. First Contact, the best TNG movie imo, had Lily as well, who basically made Picard blow up the ship. The bra and panties scenes in the were lame but Uhura went one on one against the Klingon leader.

I was extremely pleased. Nothing has felt this much like TOS in a long time! I loved the character interactions, the action, and the visuals. I think the thing that struck me most was that everything was "controlled" for the most part (and I mean the tin a good way). The humor was controlled, and not silly. The action, while big, was not pointless and never-ending. The visual effects were there to serve the story, and not overwhelm it. I think they did an excellent job of finding a balance not not getting "out of control," so hats off to the film makers. I also thought Kirk was the most Kirk-like we've seen him yet. I never had a huge problem with NuKirk, but this was really much more like S2 Shat-Kirk.

On a side note, we have a movie that is well reviewed and clearly (for the first time in a while) has nice fan support. Let's not ruin a pleasant weekend for Trekkies with a bunch of pointless inter-webs bickering about foolishness that has little to do with Star Trek. Gawd, can't you all be happy and not argue, even just for one freakin' weekend? I'd argue the "gender / equality discussion" is really off-topic for this thread.

:)

I'd love not to be digressing, but I hate to reinforce the pattern that we're all expected to just ignore people who toss sexist (or racist or otherwise disgusting) comments into what's otherwise a perfectly positive conversation, as if those sentiments were just some kind of random flatulence. The onus is on those people to stop making comments like that, not on the rest of us to pretend it isn't happening.

I agree with everything you've said about the movie. Loved it. :techman:

Because it shouldn't matter. The crew could be all male or all female for whatever reasons, I wouldn't care. I just find it annoying that people have nothing better to do than counting how many males and females are in a movie ... seems pretty sexist to me!

So you don't care about realism? Star Trek is suppose to play in an utopian future, where equality between men and women is achieved. Heavily favouring one gender doesn't make sense at all in the context of the movie universe.

Does it feel as unreal to you as it feels to me?
JJTrek... good? :D

I hope this isn't a one-off but is going to continue. I don't want Trek to be made by people who don't really like Trek.

I just don't like bean counters whose only concern is an absolutely equal male/female ratio. That's just silly.

Agreed ... that was my point from the very beginning.

We're perfectly able of having several concerns at the same time. Diversity is just one of them. Your representation of what was said is reductive. You might wanna look to that as it's an intellectually dishonest statement.

Please come back and share your thoughts, as will I.
As I think about it, I think it's a combination of my wife and two teen daughters (only one of which is also a fan) liking it more than I did. That's weird. And, I think I may be a victim of it simply not being the story I was hoping for, though I won't criticize it for that. That's on me. That there didn't seem to be any real peril for Kirk on the planet and every plan our heroes had worked without a hitch still bothers me a bit, too. Too easy? It also had an odd TVH vibe to me, but within a much more serious story, which was an unusual combination. I didn't dislike it (gave it an A-), just don't think I liked it as much as I thought I would. I will see it again, though. We'll see how I feel after that.

I'm so sad. I really wish that I loved this movies as much as most of you do. I liked it, but I didn't love it.

There was a whole lot to like. I loved the character interactions. Im grateful that Urban's McCoy finally had more time to shine. I really loved Jayla. But I got bogged down in the action sequences. I found the way they were shot made it difficult to see what was going on. I didn't know where to look so I actually stopped trying to look.

I would start to really enjoy the character moments, then another action sequence would take over and I would lose my connection to the characters and story.

I did like it, but overall I was disappointed. I give it a B rating, but I wish I liked it more.

Maybe seeing it in 2D will help?

What's with the la

I had the same problem with it being too dark and I saw it in 3D.

2D, at least halfway back and towards the center of the theater. I was able to see everything going on without it being overwhelming.
