Is it just me or are there fewer RT reviews before Beyond is released this time than before Into Darkness? I'm guessing the remaining 200 or so will come out after the 21st...

Howdy all. Just got back.

So ...

Great movie with enjoyable, well written characters, fantastic action sequences and some fun dynamics between the different players given the circumstances they find themselves in. I don't feel it ever tried to reach for something too deep and cerebral, which is preferred to a faux attempt to do so. At the end of the day, it was a bloody fun movie.

Now, on to particulars (SPOILERS) - I'll start with the nitpicks:

So, Krall. For the majority of the movie his motivations were lacking. If you're aware of the spoilers regarding Krall's origin, then his actions do seem a little more justified/understandable in hindsight. Even so, when his origins are revealed, his response given the grudge he holds still seem wholly out of proportion and doesn't paint a particularly smart or multi-dimensional villain with legitimate motive. I feel some tweaks here and there earlier on in the piece could have helped flesh out his character.

Secondly, there was a bit of a dip midway. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it was around when Kirk and Chekov were caught by Jaylah and when the Franklin took to the skies.

Now, nitpicks aside...

The swarm was vastly more impressive in full force and on the big screen. Reminded me a bit of the Shadow's Death Cloud from Babylon 5.

Yorktown. Whoa! Beautifully realized. That was some fun play with gravity - legit or not.

The Enterprise fires her weapons in this movie. Repeat, The Enterprise FIRES WEAPONS.

Speaking of The Enterprise, she took one HELL of a beating before succumbing.

Also, Sulu moment short but got the point across. Some teenage imbecile in front of me whispered "what the fuck is this?" ...

I *really* liked how they threaded the death of Leanard Nimoy/Spock into the narrative. I had thought it would be a passing reference, but it plays a meaningful plot point, which brings me to what I feel is a *fantastic* nod to Leonard Nimoy, the original cast, Star Trek in general and the 50th anniversary...

Spock had learned of Ambassador Spock's death at the beginning of the movie. In the last ten minutes, Spock receives the personal belongings of Ambassador Spock. There was some expected Vulcan paraphernalia... and this photo (finally managed to find the right one!):

And that my friends, is by far and away the best, least convoluted way to get Shatner into the Kelvin-verse.

Very nice. speaking of which
during which film was that photo taken?

I voted B-, assuming that C is a "passing" grade. Star Trek Beyond is an enjoyable movie, with many subtle and loving nods to the franchise's 50-year-long history. Lots of good character moment, too.

However, the plot felt a bit disjointed to me, with too many different threads developing simultaneously and too many interruptions.

I also felt that Krall was a rubbish villain with awful motivation. Nero was a better villain in my opinion; sure, he was just a shouty, angry madman, but he was a convincing shouty, angry madman, and his action sort of made sense considering his history.

I also didn't feel that this movie had any real "WOW" moments. There were a few that seemed to aspire to be such moments, but they fell quite flat in my opinion, and a few were more silly than they should have been.

Haven't seen film yet. Couldn't resist checking for info...

That photo is from Star Trek V.
The giveaway is Sulus jumper, and Kirks hair. That and the bridge carpet.

Last night was a sneak preview Sydney (Australia) public screening of "Star Trek Beyond" - it opens today - and this was my second chance to see this movie. Tonight I have a ticket for the IMAX 3D version.

The cinema complex had a great corridor "set" at one cinema doorway (not ours, but we were able to take pics there) and a standee to encourage #GoBeyond selfies.

Don't go on /r/startrek sub reddit it's still cancer.
I have a new policy, including on the Beyond group I admin. I no longer respond to haters. I simply put up critical reaction to the movies or the RT score...that's it. I started it 2 days ago. Life is good.

Just got back! I loved the movie!

Yes, at times it felt like a Guardians of the Galaxy movie... but unlike the previous two nuTrek movies it had heart. It made me care about the characters and really enjoy their interaction. Loved the humour, too, especially surrounding Uhura's necklace...

I really hope we'll see more of Jaylah.

I have just seen the movie. Much better than Into Darkness and I also think a bit better than the first movie. It was a good move to change the writers, director, etc. in my opinion. The story felt more streamlined. There weren't any big plotholes or gimmicks like beaming across the galaxy. Overall really fun. Just the villain was a bit lame as usual. Next time they really should try to make a movie without a classical villain.

Or a villain whose motive is a vendetta. Star Trek has beaten this horse to death. There have been five movies in a row - six, if the Borg plan was a vendetta for their losing against the Federation and preventing the Federation from forming - where the villain had a vendetta. (Every move this year, where the villain has a vendetta, has been described as having a weak villain. These movies include Deadpool, Batman vs Superman, Captain America, ID4, Tarzan, Secret Life of Pets. I understand why it is that these movies are written this way - revenge transcends cultural barriers. However, it has become uninteresting and is reflective of Hollywood running on fumes. That, and the large number of sequels, prequels, and reboots in the works, which, at last count, numbered 165.)

I am seeing the film tomorrow.

Yeah, I didn't understand quite how Edison could turn into Krall, the big villain. He fought for the Federation after all and then just because he likes war and they didn't find his crashed ship, he turned all Stargate Atlantis Wraith like, sucks life energy out of other people to survive and went all mass murderous on humans, he fought for in the past. I just don't find his arc really convincing. It is a bit too far fetched. A good villain just needs better writing. Like I said above already, next time they should try something else than an angry guy bent on revenge and mass murder. No real villain at all is what I am hoping for.

And when it comes to the photo, I am wondering if anyone quite new to the Star Trek franchise is wondering, who those guys are. :p
I guess it would have been easier for newcomers, if they used an older photo, where the TOS characters are still young and wearing the gold, blue, red colours. But then it wouldn't have worked with Spock's storyline in the movie. They needed a photo of an older Spock still in Starfleet to explain his change of mind.

Uhura's necklace has provided one of the best jokes of the movie. The bit about giving your girlfriend a radioactive rock/tracking device as a gift. :guffaw:

And I also hope, Jaylah will be back. She was really great. :techman:

Yup, possibly the best joke in any Star Trek movie. It was good when McCoy called it a radioactive rock but then the tracking device stuff... :D

They totally set it up like that. I hope they won't backtrack there.
I suppose it also depends on the writers for the next movie. We initially thought Carol Marcus would return, too. I much prefer Jaylah, though. :p

I agree. Jaylah was better written than Carol Marcus. And we never saw her underwear, too, which I appreciate after the track record of the previous two movies, where only the mothers weren't shown in bras, but all the other prominent female characters were.

They put her into the Starfleet academy. But even if the next movie doesn't play very long after Beyond, they should still add her. They could just explain it away with her having much experience already. I mean she already did quite a lot on the Franklin. She definitely isn't bad with technology. And her fighting is top class. Really good. If Kirk can go from cadet to captain, she definitely can at least join the crew of the Enterprise with a lower rank.

Yeah, I'll never get over how gratuitous Carol Marcus' scene was. Total fan service, I rolled my eyes so hard.

But Jaylah was so much better. It was refreshing to see a woman in Trek who isn't overly sexualized. She kicks butt. And I thought Boutella did a great job even with the more emotional moments. Like when they leave the planet and we see Jaylah's face.

A franchise that can let Wesley Crusher fly the Enterprise before he even goes to the Academy will definitely find a fun role for Jaylah.

Just came back from the movie. I give it a B+. It's not perfect, but I definitely liked it more than Star Trek Into Darkness and I think it's also a little better than Star Trek (2009). Here are a few random observations:

SPOILERS, obviously!

+ The obvious theme for the movie is teamwork. And as others have noted, it's not particularly deep, but true and important nonetheless.
+ In the best way possible the story felt like an episode of Star Trek on television. It's pretty straigh-forward and simple, but it hits all the right marks.
+ I'm so so glad I didn't know the spoiler about Krall's background. I was wondering through the whole movie what's going on with him. Granted, the revelation in the end seems a little far fetched, but I liked the idea. Why did his appearance and name (!) change, though?
+ Michael Giacchino's score is superb. The homages to the TMP score are nice touches. The music when they first visit Yorktown station is amazing and full of wonder.
+ Surprisingly many little references to Enterprise: the Franklin design, MACOs, polarized hull, the Xindi and even the Franklin uniforms are very reminiscent of the Enterprise jumpsuits.
+ Kind of a bummer they couldn't reference DS9 or Voyager (other than ”Commodore Paris”).
+ I thought the use of pop songs in this was laid on a bit too thick. I love the Beasties and “Sabotage”, but the use of that song in the movie was almost too cringeworthy for me. Still love Rihanna's “Sledgehammer”, though. :)
+ The Sulu and his family thing was handled beautifully. As the non-issue it really should be. Bravo!

Yes, at times it felt like a Guardians of the Galaxy movie...
Yeah, I felt the same thing. Especially that scene in the beginning of the movie with the tiny aliens Kirk is visiting. There are some instances where the humor seemed a little forced to me, though.

I really hope we'll see more of Jaylah.

Jaylah was the best thing about the movie for me. One of the most heartbreaking moments in the whole film is in the scene where Jaylah fights Krall's henchman on the roof and she sees the crew beaming away. For a brief moment she seems to think Kirk is driving away, too. Boutella's facial expression sells her fear of being left behind and abandoned (again) rather well. I just wish there was more of Jaylah in the movie. I understand that in a movie with so many people you can't give everyone an equal amount of screen time. I really wish we'd have seen more of Uhura and Chekov, too!
