Spock's Blood after the childhood fight scene

Is there a lot of canon about why Vulcan blood is green? I'm no chemist but it seems a bit fanciful to me*. Horseshoe crabs have blue blood because their blood is based on copper instead of iron. What kind of blood base would turn green on oxygenation?

*yes, yes, I realise how ridiculous it is

I thought horseshoe crabs have blue blood because they're arthropod royalty.

(Hoo boy, I'm on a roll! Somebody stop me!)

Certainly, that Rom's blood was chartreuse. The one hanging from Sulu's sword on the drill platform.

Yeah, I wasn't joking about the color, just about the significance. (Truth be known, I'd have preferred emerald but c'mon, even I won't make a federal case of it.)

Yeah, I think McCoy cited his copper based blood as the reason Spock survived the cloud creature attack in 'Obsession'.
Dialogue from that episode:
GARROVICK: He saved my life, Captain. I should be lying dead in there, not him.
(The cabin door opens.)
SPOCK: Fortunately, neither of us is dead, Ensign. The reverse pressure worked. The vent is closed.
KIRK: Don't misunderstand my next question. Mister Spock, why aren't you dead?
MCCOY: It's that green blood of his.
SPOCK: My haemoglobin is based on copper, not iron.
MCCOY: I'll bet he left a bad taste in the creature's mouth, too.
SPOCK: Colloquially expressed, but essentially correct.

Corroded pennies turn green. Gene Roddenberry remembered this from his childhood spent digging them out of fishponds and incorporated into his Spock biology. Thus green blood means it is copper based.

Then he got it wrong. See my horseshoe crab posting above.

Terran crabs aren't Vulcans.

Aside from the copper, there could be little to NO similarity where the makekup of their blood is concerned.

so, umm, why do the Vulcans have red lips again?

*flees*

I noticed that first time through the movie, because the green drop of blood is in stark contrast to his red lips. All I could think of was that maybe make-up couldn't do it realistically and so just left it.

J.

I really liked the blue-tinted bruise on kiddie Spock's cheek. That was a nice touch.

And, yes, Vulcans and Romulans bleed green because the hemoglobin is based on coppper instead of iron (like it is in humans.)

I guess the "idea" is that since when copper oxidizes it turns green. I guess when the copper in Spock's blood mixes with the oxygen in his lungs it corrodes. It may not be scientifically "solid" but it is also alien biology.

this OP seems to start threads that are needlessly provocative and then abandon them.

How is it provocative. I just asked a question. People like you pile on with other tangents.

Here's an idea ... if you don't like the topic, move on. Why waste your time with such a lame, and needlessly provocative, response?

calm down. he'll be happy you came back.

so why are their lips red?

so why are their lips red?

"Multi-Quote function."

Use it.

Why are their rips red? As said above, dogs have red blood -like us- ans their lips are very dark, almost black. Maybe there's just some pigmentation effect going on giving them pink lips.

Or this is just something with no 'in-universe' explanation and has to suffice with the meta-explanation of limitations in makeup or just simply it never occured to people to paint their lips a tint of green to go along with Vulcans having green blood. I mean, their skin logically should have a much more green tinge to it, too. Hell, they should probably almost look like pale Orions.

Their lips are red because they are. Nevertheless, they have green blood because of the oxidized copper content in it.

Well, Gene was never one for scientific or historical accuracy, or even plausibility. (see the old episodes with the gangster planet and Nazi planet for some nice examples) Apparently, he just wanted to tell a story... ironically, his show spawned one of the most tech-minutiae-obsessed fanbases around. Go figure. :vulcan:

basically, you're saying, it's all BS.

got it.
