Spin off series idea

Just been thinking about an idea that I had for a Star Trek spin-off, it’s likely not all that original but it sounds quite interesting (to me anyway). It’s not a suggestion for the next Star Trek series, more like a spin-off years down the line if Star Trek had made a successful return to T.V. I’m not expecting the idea to win universal acclaim or anything; it’s just something I’ve been toying around with.

What about a series set in the lead up to the Eugenics Wars/World War 3 exploring the origins of Khan amongst other things? I’m pretty sure there was a book about something similar. It could be the grittier ‘Star Trek’ that some people clamour for and such a setting could enable writers to touch on many issues relative to early 21st century life. It could also explore how the future more ‘enlightened’ Humans emerged from the ruins of a dark 21st century dystopia. It would require some canon change, perhaps for the Eugenics Wars/WW3 to be merged into one single conflict several decades in the future. Thought of some vague story ideas. When the Eastern Coalition invades a weaker state the western world is reluctant to engage them in direct combat, so instead they genetically engineer a series of prototype ‘super soldiers’, these augments are trained to covertly join and organise the resistance in the invaded country. The results are spectacular and the Coalition is forced into a humiliating withdrawal with heavy casualties, however in the new power vacuum the augments decide that they want political power in the country that they have fought to protect. (Parallels with the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the U.S training the Mujahideen who would later become the Taliban). The augments believe themselves to be superior to their creators and found a political ideology based on rule by the genetically pure, even carrying out and funding terrorist activities in order to spread the ideology and amass worldly power. Various governments hire agents to hunt down and ‘retire’ the rogue augments Blade Runner style. The series could be quite heavily serialized with long story arcs.

It’s just a rough outline and I haven’t thought of characters yet, but I think a genuine T.V writer could do something with the concept.

1. I would love it.

2. It would almost certainly flop. It's just too inside-baseball. Few potential viewers would know or care about the issues revolving around the Eugenics Wars and Star Trek without spaceships would be extremely confusing for most.

The way to get Trek back on TV is to play off Trek XI's success and go back to the basics: Starfleet crew on a spaceship, going boldly. Boring, I know, but it would give Trek a foothold on TV (best place would be basic cable, though not necessarily Skiffy). You can build out from there.

I know where your coming from but I think it's debatable. I mean on the other hand look at Caprica, you could argue 'well whose gonna be interested in a bunch of people sat around thinking about creating robots'. But apparently space battles are out and political + familial intrigue is the new in thing. Judging by the ratings people seem to want long discussions on the merits of cloning and artificial intelligence.

The first new series should definitely be set on a starship, the one I was thinking of was a spin off at some later date. And i'd market it in a way that it's essentially separate to Star Trek but set in the same universe, something dark + gritty that shows us how this utopian existence came about. I'd love to see Khan as an anti-hero soldier who gradually turns into a villain for example.

Well, let's see exactly how long Caprica lasts before you jump to those conclusions.

Judging by the ratings people are not interested in "long discussions on the merits of cloning and artificial intelligence." Caprica's ratings keep dropping. If it wasn't for some hope of prestige/critical recognition/lack of better options Caprica would already be off the air.
