Just been thinking about an idea that I had for a Star Trek spin-off, it’s likely not all that original but it sounds quite interesting (to me anyway). It’s not a suggestion for the next Star Trek series, more like a spin-off years down the line if Star Trek had made a successful return to T.V. I’m not expecting the idea to win universal acclaim or anything; it’s just something I’ve been toying around with.
What about a series set in the lead up to the Eugenics Wars/World War 3 exploring the origins of Khan amongst other things? I’m pretty sure there was a book about something similar. It could be the grittier ‘Star Trek’ that some people clamour for and such a setting could enable writers to touch on many issues relative to early 21st century life. It could also explore how the future more ‘enlightened’ Humans emerged from the ruins of a dark 21st century dystopia. It would require some canon change, perhaps for the Eugenics Wars/WW3 to be merged into one single conflict several decades in the future. Thought of some vague story ideas. When the Eastern Coalition invades a weaker state the western world is reluctant to engage them in direct combat, so instead they genetically engineer a series of prototype ‘super soldiers’, these augments are trained to covertly join and organise the resistance in the invaded country. The results are spectacular and the Coalition is forced into a humiliating withdrawal with heavy casualties, however in the new power vacuum the augments decide that they want political power in the country that they have fought to protect. (Parallels with the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the U.S training the Mujahideen who would later become the Taliban). The augments believe themselves to be superior to their creators and found a political ideology based on rule by the genetically pure, even carrying out and funding terrorist activities in order to spread the ideology and amass worldly power. Various governments hire agents to hunt down and ‘retire’ the rogue augments Blade Runner style. The series could be quite heavily serialized with long story arcs.
It’s just a rough outline and I haven’t thought of characters yet, but I think a genuine T.V writer could do something with the concept.
