Space-Drill Fight Scene

Contrary to how it may seem, I haven't given up on this movie. It may actually make a fairly entertaining alternate universe Star Trek story, but I would personally rather have visited the 'real' Star Trek universe once again.

Seem? It should be fresh and new but everything has to be exactly the same as what came before it, damnit!

I have it on good authority that much of the film's second act is devoted to exploring Sulu's psychological insecurities regarding the size of his penis and hence his habitual carrying around of an extensible phallic weapon.
Well, that's good to hear...

...but I don't think the whole second half of the film was needed to put the presence of the sword in context. It could have probably been done with a line or two of dialog taking up less than one minute of screentime.

^ Well, that's not as bad as the supposed director's cut where they add 30 minutes of characters standing around explaining where Gary Mitchell, Christine Chapel and Number One are since we never see them on screen. :p

...I find the idea that Sulu carries a sword around with him on all his missions to be somewhat ridiculous.
Do we know that Sulu brought that sword with him? The guy he is fighting also has a sword; perhaps Sulu's sword actually belongs to one of the guys on the platform.
:vulcan:

I wonder why our military and police don't carry such modern weaponry around with them.

...The bothersome part isn't that Sulu can use a sword, it's that he chooses to use one at a seemingly inopportune time. And isn't it lucky that he thought to take it with him on this mission...

...I find the idea that Sulu carries a sword around with him on all his missions to be somewhat ridiculous. To each his own.

Furthermore, the fact the nobody seems to have a phaser (neither good guys nor the "bad" guys) makes me wonder if perhaps phasers would not function properly on the platform.

Seems reasonable enough of itself, but TrekMovie suggests otherwise.
I do seem to recall another (possibly earlier) mention of a telescoping or collapsible sword belonging to Sulu. I'll see if I can dig it up, but there was also talk of Sulu's fighting skill as far back as the time a local news traffic helicopter caught them filming the drilling-platform scene more than a year ago.

---------------

Since our soldiers carry knifes and Sulu's sword collapses into the handle and therefore can be carried on a belt with no problems - why not?

I feel the need for a Sulu's Sword thread, a la the Captain Robau thread...with posts something like:

Sulu's sword is so sharp it can slice a red-headed mosquito's pubic hair into thirds longways.

But, alas, I feel a thread about Sulu's sword would soon degenerate into sophomoric gay humor, knowing what we know about George Takei.

Yeah too bad it would have been an intersting thread.

Why are we still thinking in terms of Trek?
Quite right. If they'd changed all the names there would be no connection.

The logic or appeal of having a sword fight on a dangling space platform escapes me.

---------------
The logic of being silent and turning off all lights in the depths of space escapes me.

The logic of only arming yourselves with two types of weapons in the flagship of a multi-systems-spanning Federation escapes me.

The logic of having a bridge/command center on the top of a starship with only one access way (the turbo lift) escapes me.

Want more? :p

Captain Robau is so badass he can start a thread about Sulu's sword that WON'T devolve into gay jokes about George Takei.

well as i mentioned previously there could be a possible explanation just like dune had one.

if they knew there was some type of dampening field that would interfere with a weapon,,
or just having an energy based weapon might prove hazerdous then that could explain why yeah bring a sword to the party.

Maybe they don't use phasers on the drill platform for the same reason you don't fight with flamethrowers in an oil field.

^^ Forum member Rii pointed out to me that trekmovie.com claims Sulu brought a phaser to the fight, but dropped it:

It would have been glorious.

Please, by all means.

Maybe you can also explain the logic of ignoring logic?
