This argument might actually carry some weight if there wasn't far more eye candy for the women in this movie. They made McCoy and Pike handsome men (when they weren't in the tv show--- at least The Menagerie's radiated Pike). It helps that the two leads are both gorgeous, too.

Women routinely need to strip down for roles in movies....usually this nakedness has absolutely nothing to do with the plot or the advancement of it....while men remain mostly clad.

Women do that yes, but you've missed the major point in this movie. Kirk gave us an underwear scene too AND he did have a mini chub. I caught it every time I've seen the movie.

Both women AND men have a reason to drool in this movie. Men have Uhura and the Orion girl, we've got EVERYONE ELSE!

If people are going to complain about being sexist, chose one that legitimately does it, not this one.

Agreed. I think I've heard more female comments towards the eye candy. I haven't heard a single male make comment outside of this board

I have a wicked sense of humor and very sarcastic... I love to joke around.....I'll use LOL whenever I see fit. I also use it to indicate that what I'm saying in fact a joke and/or being sarcastic.

I like you more already.

As for the mini skirt - I'm surprised at how many friends have said "I'd wear that" and I don't tend to befriend the bimbo types. Though I am happy I've made them see this film and turned them into geeks.

Abrams did as much as he could while keeping true to the original series.

See my previous comment about that. Orion females were never slaves, Enterprise made that clear. It was the males who were the slaves. The whole "animal women" thing was akin to a trojan horse, allowing Orion women to spread amongst other cultures so they could extend their control over susceptible males.

If anything, we should question whether or not Kirk was acting of his own free will in that scene and whether or not Gaila should be up on attempted rape charges.

I'm going to make an attempt at understanding your broken 'English'. We do get the point even with our limited male brains. Makes you wonder how we dress ourselves in the morning.

Again my main complaint is not the uhura bra scene... I mean LOL that's pretty tame compared to even just the music video that are out.......but that coupled w/ this ridiculous affair -- I just don't think this character is getting the respect she deserves. I'm not saying that she should just say "hailing frequencies open capt"...lord no...she finally has a real role !!!!!!! And what the fuck do they have her doing...RIGHT AWAY...in a got damn romantic lead...right away...couldn't even wait for the next movie. That's my main gripe.

There was no "romantic lead" in this movie. There was Uhura, the ship's communications officer who proved to be exceptionally skilled at her job and whose detection of the Klingon transmissions pretty much saved Earth, and Spock, the ship's first officer.

It is ridiculous to suggest that Uhura can't be competent at her job and also carry on a romantic relationship at the same time. They weren't having an "affair", they were a couple. They presented Uhura as someone Spock could turn to when his home had been brutally destroyed and his mother killed. You don't do that with someone you just had a one night stand with.

As for the general subject of this thread, I'm getting monumentally pissed off with this crap. If Uhura had participated in the bar brawl I would have thought a lot less of her. She's not a thug. Uhura has always been presented as someone who could look after herself but she doesn't need to get in to bar brawls to prove it.

The article's line about Uhura being in a heterosexual relationship is ridiculous as well. When has Uhura ever been presented as something other than straight ?

Uhura wears a skirt in the movie and that's bad because Starfleet is a military organisation. Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, W-R-O-N-G! Watch Star Trek. It might teach you a thing or two about, erm, Star Trek.

Uhura wears a (whispers) bra in the movie. I thought women wore those. Maybe I'm wrong. Both incarnations of Uhura were played by attractive woman, but it seems some people think she should wear a burqa while on duty.

So, the long and short of my argument here is that the author of this article either needs psychiatric help or a set of TOS DVDs - or perhaps both. Got to do something while you're sitting around in a straight jacket waiting for Nurse to deliver your pills.

Haha, my gosh. There's even an episode (where Scotty is accused of murder) where Jim Kirk takes his male crewmembers to what looks like a 22nd century whore house for a little R+R.

Agreed completely. I have heard more women drooling over Chris Pine than I've heard men drooling over Zoe Saldana (side note: can you hear drooling? Probably a poor choice of words). Uhura was presented as very competent and intelligent. I loved that they added the linguist dimension to what was previously a switchboard operator.

However, and I do not mean to hijack this thread, I think there are a few feminist elements JJ could integrate into future movies. They are:

1. Add more central female characters. As it was, Uhura was the only one in this movie. Of course, that's mostly because this was an origin story and there were virtually no important women in the original show. For starters, he could give Rand and Chapel the Uhura treatment and add another dimension to their characters. Chapel could become a full MD and Assistant CMO and Rand could become, well, anythign would be better than the glorified secretary/captain's plaything that she was in TOS.

2. Put Uhura in command for a scene. If Chekov can be temporarily in command, Uhura can be too. I know we've already had Janeway, but Nichelle Nichols has made it very well known that Uhura was, at one point, slated to be put in command for a scene and the network vetoed. That would be an actual meaningful and significant homage, unlike Sulu leaving the parking break on. *rolls eyes*

3. Have a kick ass female villain. When was the last time Star Trek had a take no prisoners bad ass woman as an arch nemesis? Most of the female villains have relied on their brains or cunning (see: Valeris). Even worse, we have the example of the Romulan Commander who was easily fooled to the point of incompetence by some fake sexual advances by Spock. Come on, JJ, write in a Major Kira style bad-girl.

I agree. In general, people on screen are either young and unattractive, or old and botoxed. As if that's an accurate representation of the general public.
