'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XI

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

As I said earlier, Uhura was presented as being able to look after herself but at the same time she was smart enough not to go around looking for fights.

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

Well yeah. They turned Uhura into a bookworm/intellectual in this version.

Shes Spock's student and lover.

It makes sense.

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

Thank you Abrams for showing us a future where feminists no longer exist :P

I'd fix that to... Thank you Abrams for showing us a future where feminists no longer need to exist. ...and then I'll agree. ;)

I identify as a feminist. And as a geek. I loved the movie. Was I totally happy with the way women were portrayed in the movie? Not entirely. There really weren't enough women as secondary/background characters, and I think that was a mistake. Would I have added another lead female character to even the mix? Absolutely not - this is a Star Trek film based on TOS. You simply can't do that.

As for Uhura's role in the movie... she got to do a whole lot more in this film than she did in series. I didn't see her as a romantic lead, since it's not intended as a romantic film. She's not really even a female lead, even though she's really the only woman character who gets real screen time. The movie is the Kirk and Spock show, always has been and really always will be, and I wouldn't change that.

Uhura was shown to be an amazing linguist, smart and sexy. I thought the scene with her taking off her clothes down to her really humdrum underwear was amusing. Gratuitous? Of course, but Abrams knows who his audience is. We also had Kirk in his humdrum underwear. And if the Orion cadet could wear fun underwear, what the hell is wrong with those other two? ;)

The miniskirts, while fun to look at and obviously a nod to TOS, make utterly no sense as a working uniform. But ZS has fabulous legs, and I sure as hell didn't mind seeing them. I'm sure Kirk and millions of fanboys (and girls) will agree. There was simply no way they were ever going to be excluded. A minor gripe with me.

The relationship with Spock? I enjoyed it. He's hot, brilliant, and alien with cute ears, and she's obviously got him wrapped around her little finger. What's not to like there?

Abrams' Star Trek made me absolutely believe that gender wasn't going to keep anyone from doing what they wanted to do. What else do you need?

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

Well, most of my female friends (and me) are able to look after ourselves, but you won't catch us punching people in the face because they're Chelsea fans.

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

^This is a Star Trek movie. We had seven pre-established characters that needed something to do. Arguably, there could have been someone like Christine Chapel or Number One in the movie, but really the movie needed to stick to the core cast before it started swimming in inconsequential characters.

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

Okay Chapel got mentioned in passing, but you're right, she didn't make it to full character status, she just passed McCoy the hypo with the costisone.

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

No, if you were supposed to be insulted then you would be. I am attempting to tell you that your use of the English language is not helping you. If you do not wish to accept that advice then that is your problem..

Well why do keep giving unsolicited advise? Here ya go spouting off this bullshit but yet YOU'RE STILL RESPONDING...there now that should get rid of you!

You just used a perfect example of what I'm talking about. Slow down when you type. If you communicate more clearly then people will understand you more easily..

Well I have to say you did try but alas you weren't funny....it's ok you'll get me next time...they all can't be winners and in your case none of them are.

I'm not going to put you on ignore and I'd draw a warning for myself if I told you I was going to. Ignoring you won't help you see why quite a few of us in this thread are not particularly impressed with your views..

And this is a perfect example of when people have too much time on their hands and they focus on anal nonsense.... :D And thanks for the offer but I don't need your help, unless you can do roofs...I do have this little leak I must tend to...but other than that...I'm good ! :)
As already stated quite a few times...I don't give a shit what you and "others" think...Actually...this is a perfect example of what I'm talking about. Slow down when you read. If your reading comprehension was better then people will understand you more easily. Wow my last 3 sentences sound like a truck load o' shit...wonder where I heard them from!

Then just control yourself and ignore me outright...! Go ahead....do it!!!

That's not true. Humans have this ability called empathy. I do not need to be a woman to see the things my sister goes through. I do not need to be black to see that some people treat black people badly. ..

I understand what you're saying about empathy but it's certainly not the same thing as first hand experience. Don't tell me that you have even a remote idea of what it's like to experience racism -- being a white male yourself....please....that is laughable and that's just what I'm doing...so hey thanks for the laugh good pal o' mine.

We didn't "need" it. We didn't "need" a new Star Trek movie at all. Human civilisation would not have ended without a new movie. What this movie is receiving so much praise for is that it brings back the core of the characters we Star Trek fans fell in love with. Uhura was always presented as an emotional, loving person and Spock was always presented as someone who did feel but could not find a way to express it - look at his relationship with Christine Chapel. Even if she and Spock were not a couple, Uhura would have still been there for Spock because he just lost his mother, his home and almost his entire race.

Blah blah blah...you didn't answer the question. Would the movie of suffered if they omitted this plot element. A yes or no will suffice. Oh no!!! But you can't answer me because you're ignoring me :(

So it's ok that you're spelling civilisation like that because why you're english? Well most of us are from the usa and we don't spell it like that so it really makes it hard to understand you...just a bit of advise for you...I know you didn't ask for it...don't you hate when people offer advise that you don't want? :p

Both of you need to simmer down now.

Oh please. There are quite a few black racists (and other skincolors besides) out there as well. Being racist is definitely not something reserved for those of Caucasians descent. As such, a white male has exactly the same probability of experiencing racism as someone else has. Besides, that's off-topic.

I'm going to second that.

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

Back to the feminists.

How come there are no Meninists? It is because they need no validation?

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

Blah blah blah...
You were supposed to post a picture of you in a miniskirt, now don't be all intellectual, get to it! :D

LOL intellectual...I'm sure you would have a lot of people disagreeing with you about that !
See peeps (that means people for you proper old farts out there) ...I'm able to make fun of myself w/ no problem...I know it's (mostly) not true AND I have an endless supply of material. :D

But anyhoo.....I don't know about me and a mini skirt.... you're not supposed to wear them if you're over 35, or is it 30?? And besides you guys probably won't like it, and that's my main function: to please men.......my legs are very muscular especially my calves...so yeah I just know you guys wouldn't be interested !

I can't promise to simmer...but you have my word that I'll saute.

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

I'm REALLY likin' this girl!

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

Well, I'm a woman and didn't find anything remotely offensive about the movie. In fact, if I'd had my way, we'd've seen not only Pine but Quinto and Urban without their shirts on too.

Hear hear!

Hopefully, they'll save that for the sequel.

Nice gams, huh?

Gigity.

I almost read "salute" there... that would be the other sex.

You can't decide for us what we'd like or not, that's just sexist. We need to see it for ourselves. :D

Ah it's because you men are runnin the show (for now)...so you don't need menninism...

You're absolutely correct...racist is not reserved for just the whiteys...I hear "reverse racism" and I don't like that either...believe me I say something no matter who is making the comment.

You're incorrect with your assesement that a white male has just as much of a chance at being discrimated against than say a black guy...not here in the USA! But we've really made great strides..one word: Obama!

I'm REALLY likin' this girl!

Damn baby...I see you have serious issue! :guffaw:

The arms aint too bad either...it's just everything in between that I need to work on. :guffaw:

Jesus I meant to type salute...let's chalk this up as yet another misspelling...so what is that....53 for today...I think that's my personal best. :guffaw:
