Should TOS characters be seen or referred to?

Fuller's made it pretty clear that he views the cast of the current movies as the accepted casting for the TOS characters, saying that he might like to have Ryder playing Spock's mother at some point.
That sounds entirely reasonable. The only difficulty is that some of them would be rather expensive for a TV(ish) show. But, that would be great for the ones they could get.

I'm guessing Pike's crew minus Spock if we see anyone from the main storylines. Along with a redesigned pre-refit 1701. I just hope that if they do, they cast and write him like Hunter did, not Greenwood. I like Greenwood but his Pike is too even tempered and well adjusted to be interesting, and way too old. Hunter's Pike was Picard with issues.
That's a great way to describe Hunter's Pike! I'm a huge fan of The Cage and particularly because of Hunter's portrayal of Pike and the excellent writing that went into his character. If you watch the episode, you'll notice that it's Pike's constant pressure that moves the story on. But, it's an intellectual pressure that he keeps using to force things to move forward. Always questioning, reasoning, and pushing for an explanation. It's not the typical manner in which a hero moves the story forward. I loved it but I can see why NBC wanted a more traditional hero!

I guess it would fall into two categories: Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty (everyone else should be too young I think), and the Enterprise that the general audience would know. And Pike's Number One, Jose Tyler, etc. that only we would know. Chris Pike kind of straddles the fence. You might throw in folks like Mendez or Corby.

As for the Movie cast: I would think a better way to go (since everyone is ten years older, right?) would be to treat it the way DC treats movies vs. TV shows. The Flash TV guy is different (and better than :) ) the movie guy.

Actually NBC was fine with Hunter. When the second pilot was ordered it seemed likely it would go to series, Hunter's wife said he shouldn't do it since it seemed likely that he had a movie career ahead of him. Ironically, the head injury that killed him happened during a movie he was filming. If he had done Trek, he might still be alive. It happened in 74, but if he had Trek notoriety, he might have not done that particular film. He died similar to Natasha Richardson where he had an injury and seemed ok for a few days and then just died.
But yes, he was a great captain. Very real and despite being better looking than Shatner, they didn't play him like a lech.

NBC executives actually became very annoyed at his wife and I gather it was a two-sided agreement that he wouldn't be back!

What I meant was that his character was very cerebral. NBC wanted a more action adventure series. If Hunter had returned, no doubt his character would become more action oriented. They would've changed his character to fit the new tone of the show.

All the other shows with the exception of the original have included references to previous series, if not outright appearances from old characters, so it seems reasonable to assume Discovery would too. Amanda seems to be a character they intend on featuring at some point, and if their Number One isn't the same as the one from Pike's Enterprise that's at least a name drop/reference to the original character.

Since the action takes place ten years before TOS we can assume that the TOS characters were not famous at that point. Kirk was twentyish ahd was probably a cadet. As such it would be unlikely that people would talk about him.

I still think they could reference the same type of early characters that Axanar was going to utilize, and still believe that it could be what pushed things over the edge in that scenario. I don't want TOS references directly, but Pike and April and other "name" background characters would be great.

I guess they could be talking about the Talosians that Pike encountered a couple of years before, still I was under the impression that that mission was kept a secret given the death penalty attached to simply being guilty of going to their planet.

"It was supposed to be classified and super-secret, so of course, everyone knew about it almost immediately."

I can't recall at the moment what that's from, but I'll bet it applies to Talos, with as many people as were on Pike's ship, and a General Order issued that either everyone saw, or even worse, inspired curiosity by being secret for everyone below captain. (Or maybe even only revealed if a ship got near the Talos system.)

Might not be what you're thinking of, but there is a similar quote in ch19 of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone: "Tokens from your friends and admirers," said Dumbledore, beaming. "What happened down in the dungeons between you and Professor Quirrell is a complete secret, so, naturally, the whole school knows... (bold mine).

Is that it?

"That'll put marzipan in your pie plate, Bingo!"

In other words, yes, that's it! :techman:

(Now to see who will identify the source of THAT quote. ;) )

I personally think they should not have any of the TOS (or prime universe versions of post-Narada timeline crew) seen or referenced. Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Uhura, and Sulu should all be junior officers no one has heard of.

The TOS characters we should hear about or see should be characters like Captain Pike, Captain Tracey, Captain April, Captain Garth (or maybe not since Axanar fans will get upset), Commodore Decker, or Commodore Wesley, Richard Daystrum, and maybe Sarek, since the rumor is they may be featuring Amanda (though I am opposed to both). Basically I want this to be on the periphery of TOS, but I don't want too much overlap with TOS.

I'd like to see Spock for sure, I'm certain they will have someone from the movies in there.

No one from the nu-trek universe are really big stars on movies, I mean guys like Zachary Quinto still do most their stuff on tv-shows so absolutely.
