Should TOS characters be seen or referred to?

Personally, I'd like to see them use the Kelvin-verse actors for any characters they use who have appeared in those films. For me, those actors are now the characters, regardless of timeline
Dear God no, apart from Urban and to a slightly lesser extent Quinto, they span the entire range from barely adequate to bloody awful.

Well see, I personally 100% buy Chris Pine as Kirk, and have bought into his journey across the three films. Different strokes for different folk though, ultimately.

I just don't think it's in the franchises best interests to have two versions of those characters floating around whilst Kelvin films are still being produced, which going by official announcements still appears to be the case.

If Boothby isn't Human, but instead a long life alien, then he could have been an adult during the time of the Discovery series.

Boothby is human. (There's no indication he isn't, anyway.)

And that's perhaps the best thing. Not every wise or sage character has to be an alien. Boothby is just a normal, regular guy. Part of the reason he's such an engaging character. He does one thing (tending the Academy grounds) and does it well. Trek could use more working-class characters like that.

I'd put Saldana (and reluctantly Pine) in the adequate category, on a sliding scale down to Pegg !

I have to agree, there's no sense whatsoever in Discovery having another casting of the TOS characters. If you want to use them, either use Pine Quinto and Urban or Shatner and co. digitally stolen from old episodes / cgi'd. The DS9 Trials and Tribble-ations worked fantastically.

I would love to see a young McCoy w/ Johanna, or at least an obscure reference like Johanna with Bones' ex-wife. Or one of the lesser known and older crewmembers from "The Cage" (Philip Boyce) or "Where no Man Has Gone Before" (Alden, Mark Piper) also maybe a young Sarek (good chances for Amanda Grayson!) or Skon, George and Winona Kirk would be AMAZING, Robert April and his wife Sarah, maybe Kor, Kang, and Koloth (or any Klingons from TOS, preferably no cranial ridges) , a reference to Garth, the Romulan commander, a reference to Zefram Cochrane. the little gold guys from "Journey to Babel", and Janice Lester so it can be canonically confirmed she is looney and her anger about Starfleet disallowing female captains to be a false claim.

^^ Enterprise already proved that.

And, yeah, I've been advocating for more Golden Midgets for years. :D

I disagree. I think the casting is the only thing they got right. I also think Urban could play a good Gary Mitchell.

It would be fun, especially if done cleverly and not too often. Alas, I doubt two people on Earth will agree 100% on what the right version of that combination would be!

love to finally see a Live action version of Robert April. Also i'm in the minority to see Christopher Pike be referred or seen in an episode or 3.

I hope no pre-existing characters are seen or referenced. The galaxy is small enough already.

Starfleet is small enough that NOT having pre-exisiting characters seen or referenced would be odd. Don't forget, when the NCC-1701 was around, there were only 12 (Constitution Class) Starships. Of course all the officers in Starfleet know each other.

The twelve ships alone would already represent thousands of officers. That's small enough for it to be believable that they would know each other, but not small enough to be odd that they wouldn't.

One version of Superman on Supergirl and another in the current movies works for me, so I don't have much trouble with the idea of a third Kirk and Spock - and certainly not with a third Christopher Pike.

If done, it should be done very mildly and delicately, realistically and only if it is something the story needs or can excuse. When everyone knows everyone, and everyone is in everyone's story, it makes the universe feel small and makes it feel unrealistic and it is transparent, gaudy, ugly fan service. That was a problem with the Star Wars prequels.

Oh, the Trek universe is already smaller than the neighborhood I live in - a lot less cultural diversity.

I think they should stay away from it. Star Trek already has a big shadow, no need to make it bigger than it needs to be by throwing out references to past works.

I wouldn't be surprised of they're specifically blocked from featuring TOS characters while the film series is underway. Kinda like how Smallville had to use Oliver Queen/Green Arrow because they weren't allowed Bruce Wayne/Batman during the run of the Christopher Nolan bat films.
