Ships of the Line 2012

Got it today. I like the March and June images (both happen to be Tobias Richter's). That Insurrection pic is just awesome. The Tomorrow is Yesterday image is nice, but the very same ship angle is on the next page. That's a bit lame.

I'm not one for calendars, but I did pick up that hardback "Ship of the Line" book from a few years back collecting a bunch of the images. Any chance of another one of those appearing in the near future? It would be great to have not only ships from novels and past shows, but also the new Trek films. A follow-up to the Starship Recognition Manual would also be nice (although I found that book a bit disappointing overall).

This year's calendar had the Kelvin and Enterprise from the last movie.

I just picked up a copy of Ship of the Line. Although most of the art was impressive, I couldn't believe how badly done some of the captions were. One talks about a Klingon attack on a planet when they're clearly flying over ancient ruins and nothing that's been recently attacked. One mentions the Bonaventure from TAS "The Time Trap" next to a TOS version of an NX-class ship. Grumble grumble.

That was an intentional reference/retcon on the part of the artist. Here are his comments from when the calendar it first appeared in was released.

Constructed some 60 years before Captain Kirk's famous USS Enterprise, the NCC-1000 Bonaventure Class cruiser was the first official starship to be used by the newly formed United Federation of Planets. Mike Okuda suggested that name because an episode of the animated Star Trek series suggested that the first warp powered ship was the Bonaventure.

The design embodies elements of both the NX-01 Enterprise that precede it, and the Constitution class USS Enterprise that followed it. Seen here is the prototype that has yet to be christened its eventual name: the USS Bonaventure (being the first of its type, it takes the name of the class). Also seen is Space Station K-2, which is an ancestor to the K-7 station first seen in Star Trek episode 'The Trouble with Tribbles'.

I designed the ship specifically for the calendar.

Due to schedule restraints, the model was created only for the view seen in the calendar, therefore I didn't model detail for the bottom and back. That is why I'm only including a top view.

Once again thanks for the interest in my design. I hope you find my responses useful!

^Fascinating, thanks.

It's a cool-looking ship, no question, but I've always had such a soft spot for that lumpy proto-Connie from TAS. I'd love to see that misshapen ship built in 3D with Enterprise-era details. Like how the NX-class is the predecessor to the SotL Bonaventure and eventually the Akira class, the TAS Bonaventure would be the true 22nd century predecessor to the Constitution class starship.

I can't help but notice the tiny mistakes...

Like the Galileo's registry being on the Farragut shuttlecraft's nacelle.

And the Enterprise-A being in the same picture as the Reliant.

But on the whole, I absolutely loved the new calendar, and I'm looking forward to learning more about those new ships!
