Sex 'n' violence in Discovery

I keep going back and forth on this, and looking at the psychology of it all. There was an interesting commentary I saw regarding adult material and how it can (emphasis on can before the replies come pouring in) cause a disconnect in forming real relationships with people in real life. It's a phenomena in psychology that is still being studied with the advent of social media and access to communication technology that allows for less face to face interaction.

Violence has a similar impact that is still being studied, where there is a disconnect in how death works. No, this isn't the usual "video games are too violent" rant. It's just a curious thing that I have noticed.

How does this relate to sex in Star Trek? Well, honestly, it would be nice to see real relationships as part of the characters, for good, bad and everything in between. I guess what I want is not just the sex but any emotions behind it too.

I really feel like some people need to watch the first ten minutes of the first episode of Hannibal to prepare themselves for what COULD be the level of violence. Some people here seem to be convinced that "well they want it on TV eventually, so it won't be THAT bad". Ehhhhh, watch Hannibal or Dexter which were showed unedited on TV networks and then tell me. Also another point, people burned alive, insinuated rape, blood curdling screams during vaporization, exploded bulkhead embedded in someone head, an EXPLODED head, what do these have in common? All have happened on star trek

Difference is, Star Trek is a long-term CBS cash cow. They aren't going to let Fuller go to far off the beaten path with it.

Game of thrones and walking dead are also cashcows, Dexter even lasted ten seasons. Sensibilities have changed even just from the end of enterprise to now. Not to mention, in the first season of TNG someone head litterally exploded. Also, this is anecdotal, as a school teacher I can say that KIDS watch the the walking dead and game of thrones. Is it right? No, but its just how it is. You change with the times or you die. Violence for the sake of violence is not good and I don't condone it, but if someone IS going to die it should have impact, it should not be sanitized. Having sanitized violence is no better than having too much violence. There is a sweet spot as it were (bad choice of words, couldn't think of another way to put it).

Meh. Sex and violence have to serve the story. If it's just clickbait, count me out.

I've always found sex scenes in movies and TV to be boring and not narratively useful.

Back in '87 I was 11 and we watched Robocop in class. Kids know that fictional violence if fictional, and they don't mind. Ironically, it bothers adults a whole lot more.

You're right, it does bother adults more than kids, I also saw robocop as a kid and I was allowed to play halo when I was ten. For the record, I'm not arguing their should be no violence in the show, just in case that's what you thought. It should serve the plot, if it's needed. I feel like they should go to TV 14, there's a huge range of what you can do in their while still keeping if accessible.

My introduction to the Evil Dead series was my physics teacher showing the class. I was watching Robocop, Die Hard etc by 12 or 14. People handle this stuff better than others give them credit for.

How much violence can Star Trek even do and be shocking? TWOK had hanging mutilated bodies, an awful worm thing crawling out an ear and a guy vaporizing himself while making an inhuman scream.

I don't think it's going to turn into torture porn, it's probably going to be a slightly more intense version of what we've seen before. Probably a sex scene or two shot tastefully as well.

This is exactly what I'm thinking. It's not going to be Dexter or Hannibal but it's not like star trek has ever been adverse to being a little graphic.

Also, a couple of people were turned into human torches, complete with screams.

I still don't know where this idea of Star Trek as "family fare" comes from?

Because people watched it when they were younger without knowing better?

Heck, it goes beyond what's even shown on screen, what about the subject matter? You don't get much darker or messed up than kodos, or how about Tasha Yar being the "concubine" to a romulan senator. We're all mature enough to know what that really means. This is stuff that would fit right in with game of thrones

Seems like they would've figured it out when they grew up. We had a character get snarky with a victim of attempted rape in one episode, other attempted rapes, disintegrations, a yeoman getting crushed to death. Not exactly light viewing.

My dad let me see Aliens, RoboCop and The Fly II before I was 5 because he had a very relaxed view on what was appropriate for children.

So nothing really bothers me. Well actual gore does as I've learned thanks to YouTube and shock sites, movie gore doesn't bother me at all. It's just another special effect to me.

I think people just constantly think about the theme of optimism behind the original series and seemingly forget about all the darkness there was in the series. It's why it bothers when people bash on ds9 for not being "true trek"
