Hey, if Worf can become a decapitating pacifist, maybe Philippa can be redeemed. I look forward to a movie staring the incomparable Yeoh, understanding that cannon can be rewritten, even if to the great consternation of the "real fan".
By all rights, in the real world, Garak is a character that is beyond redemption, but Deep Space Nine still managed to turn him into a sympathetic character with an arc that we would root for.

Sources say Kurtzman, whose Secret Hideout captains the Trek franchise under a nine-figure overall deal with producers CBS Studios, began making plans to convert Section 31 into a tentpole feature film for the platform last summer as insiders were nervous about oversaturating the iconic property. The idea to shift to tentpoles kicked in after Kurtzman, sources say, saw Everything Everywhere All at Once and realized the role would likely earn Yeoh an Oscar.

It may be that her schedule (or price) wouldn't allow her to commit to a series; but with a film, they can both test the waters as to if this type of thing will work for P+ streaming, and be a happy medium for all parties involved.

I love Michelle Yeoh films and other things she's done, and I wish it were a series (I'd have rather seen Starfleet Academy as a film as sorry, I think that's going to become Star Trek 90210:barf:)

But the above said, who knows? If the film is popular, they could take it to a series/mini series, or do a second film.

Bottom line: I'm happy Kurtzman and Michelle Yeoh could get something going that's Star Trek related for her and fans like me who want to see her do more in the Star Trek Universe.

So is this going to be more James Bond or more Mission Impossible? I'd actually be fine with this being Mission Impossible with a Trek paintjob as the current Mission Impossible franchise is basically just a Tom Cruise vehicle. Trek and MI go way back, with Nimoy starring in both and Desilu producing both I believe

I actually remember them promoting
Voyager's Dark Frontier as a 2-hour movie back in the day.

Yeah, The Dark Frontier movie on VHS is in my parents' attic!

Has a custom box and everything. Different to the standard release of Voyager Season 5.

Garak changed. Over time he learned that while he loved his people, and his home, the State under which Cardassia was ruled was abusive, oppressive, and while he'd had a hand in that, the "stars and stripes" had been removed from his eyes and he saw it for what it truly was.

He went from being a part of systemic cruelty to rejecting it, choosing instead to fight for the rights of all people, a right for Cardassians to have their lives back, their dignity back, and he made a genuine turn from being a tool of the oppressor to being a crucial component in liberating the oppressed. The entire theme of DS9's latter seasons was based on rejection of a fascist "rules based order" and the embrace of liberation for all people. That is a redemption arc.

The Section 31 movie hasn't indicated whether or not it will follow that same pattern. If anything, things are rockier now because after 9/11, the US became more blatantly militant in not only its foreign policy (already bad enough) but its domestic policy as well, and we saw and still see an upsurge in nationalism and "America first."

It goes hand in hand with the fascist belief that "peace and order" must always be maintained. The US has long taken on the role of the Dominion, in that regard, and it bleeds into every aspect of our entertainment, and it takes conscious effort to repel it and portray a better alternative.

This movie can go one of several ways. I just believe concern is warranted. People don't have to agree, but I completely understand why there are misgivings about it, as I share some myself.

Worf kills people in self-defense or to protect others or to avenge lovers.
The difference to the Terran Emperor is obvious.

This is a big point. Worf has denounced violence except in cases of self-defense. For a Klingon, he's practically a radical. I still despise the decapitations because Christ, Star Trek, knock that shit off, but at least the purpose behind them has a genuine purpose that can be rooted in historical precedence.

So did Georgiou.
Not if she works for an agency rooted in systemic cruelty, genocide, and oppression. You can be the nicest person in the world, but if you're willing to give orders to have people murdered in the interests of the State, you haven't changed, you've just outsourced your cruelty to someone else.

We have no idea what era of Section 31 she is working for or how it will work. Or she can come across things that she starts to question with her new moral compass and challenges the system.

Seen that story a time or two.

Or it could be a complete dumpster fire and will get ignored.

I think it has the best potential of the more recent Trek projects to explore what it means to engage in moral choices. Or it could just be an action/adventure piece. Either one is in line with the Trek mold.
