Those "souces" claim the show will film at new sound stages, and I find it a little odd that all the Trek shows are filming in different locations because they're all going to want to reuse the same standing ship sets at some point or another.

It wouldn't be Star Trek otherwise.
This is indirectly explained in the note.
From February, a lot of Discovery crew will be moving over to Section 31 after a small break. However Section 31 will have its own production crew.

It needs to have its own dedicated crew, because (THIS IS THE BIG ONE) Discovery Season 4 (FOUR) will start production during production of Section 31. They need separate crews for logistical reasons.
And this information is even more exciting.

Again, utilitarian. It's the abilities they want, not the personal beliefs. A means to an end.

Yeah, and this is an interesting comment to me. I don't know if anyone here has read any of Iain Banks's Culture novels, but it makes me think of "Use of Weapons". Section 31 is obviously the Federation's equivalent of The Culture's "Special Circumstances", and Georgiou is rather like Zakalwe from that book.

...but a mirror universe baddie heading a show about section 31 honestly sounds like a bad fan fiction premise. Trek's most cringe ideas, combined!

I think everyone knows how I feel about the concept at this point.

Could it be those new stages they bought in Toronto earlier this year? (or was it last year?)

I would have preferred it if Yeoh was not the Empress of the Terran Empire. Agree with the above that that reads like the worst fan-wank fiction youve ever read. On the other hand, it is Michelle Yeoh and no one doubts her acting chops in playing the role of a Section 31 chief.

I wish it had been the same Captain Georgiou from in-universe that Burnham had always trusted and revered but who turned out to have been a Section 31 operative for decades and who had a hand in many morally questionable acts. Maybe Burnham learning about the Captain masterminding the plan for a genocidal Section 31 attack on Kronos to permanently eliminate the Klingon threat was what had made Burnham mutiny.

That might have been alot better than what we got.

I guess I'm in the minority in some way but I like the idea of the Section 31 series. (And I don't even like the idea of Section 31 itself. Go figure. lol) But I now realize WHY I like the idea for the series - it's precisely BECAUSE it's totally "a badfic premise"! Honestly, Michelle Yeoh played Mirror Georgiou so over the top that it was delightful to me, one of the highlights of DSC - it felt like watching Alexis Carrington-Colby having a particularly bad time in space, and I'm always down for that sort of camp, which is why that Secton 31 series is the only series out of the ones they announced that really might be of interest to me. So I'm really eagerly following this one along. I'm here for it. Mostly because of Michelle Yeoh, but hey.

I've read far, far, worse. I would put Generations close to it.

If she ends up being the chief.

Grass is always greener. Perhaps Phase 2 would have been better than TNG.

Sure, but since this is not the Georgiou that Burnham knew, it doesnt have the same emotional resonance. Had the Captain she had come to revere and even love been the one willing to carry out a Section 31 mission to use a WMD to obliterate the Klingon homeworld and kill billions, that has an emotional weight and punch that isnt there when it is Mirror Georgiou, who we all know is not above doing something like that. It would also make her mutiny to stop the attack more understandable IMHO. Your mileage may differ.

I can see the point, but I just disagree. I think the emotional weight comes from Burnham having her own internal struggle, and being biased towards Georgiou because she looks like her mentor. The emotional weight is from Burnham's POV.

With this news, Discovery season 4 and Section 31 will probably be shooting at the same time in Toronto, but in 2 different studios (Pinewood for Discovery and the new CBS Studios for Section 31).

Assuming they follow Disco's pattern of premiere nine months after production begins, that could mean a premiere in February 2021.
So Live action Trek Shows might look something like this:
  1. Picard S1 ( Now)
  2. Discovery S3 ( Sept)
  3. S31 S1 (Late January '21)
  4. Picard S2 ( Fall '21)
  5. Disco S4 ( Late January '22)
  6. S31 S2 (Fall '22)
There will be enough room to insert another show in the middle of the year.

Has there been any kind of announcement regarding Disco season 3's premiere? The closest thing I've found is a comment from Sonequa Martin-Green saying she thinks it'll premiere "early 2020."

If we follow my nine months after filming started above, then since Disco season 3 began filming in July 2019, that could mean an April 2020 premiere. Indeed, this could be further supported by the fact that Picard's season finale should air at the end of March.

All that tweet says is season 3 is "coming soon" and the video with it is not available in my area. Care to share with the class what it says regarding Disco's season 3 premiere?

The video is supposedly a familiar teaser (information from a user in the region). What is important is the content of the entry, which most likely confirms the spring release date mentioned by SMG.

Missausga is literally right beside Toronto, its part of the Greater Toronto Area, its probably like a 20 minute drive between the two Studios depending on traffic, so they can easily move sets, props, actors, and anything else they want to between the two sets no problem, so its not an issue. Most the Discoveries stuff goes into storage between seasons anyways, they don't just leave it permanantly at Pinewood Studios.

And they build the CBS studio as part of their huge investiment in Toronto, the GTA is becoming a huge movie/tv city, with a booming film industry. Also CBS is not Pinewoods only customer, although Bell Media which is so invested in Star Trek it bought Pinewood to expand it for more Star Trek .

And Kurtzmen already said they want shoot all Star Trek in Toronto from now, Picard was exempt because Patrick wanted it that way, plus $20,000,000 tax incentive from California likely didn't hurt.

Even the Children of Mars, the Picard prequel from Short Treks was shot in Toronto at the University of Toronto.

ST: Pike and ST: Starfleet Academy (the two new shows Kurtzman was most likely talking about), will also likely be shot in the Greater Toronto Area.

Its interesting how Star Trek Discovery has spawned so many spin offs already, Short Treks, ST: Section 31, ST: Pike, and maybe even ST: Star Fleet Command. Its been a huge boon for the GTA's economy.
