Pretty sure he was getting paid, actually. It’s why his name always shows up in the credits on all Trek productions, even when he wasn’t involved. Probably in his contract. I figure he suspected they would try to take TNG away from him at some point, in the same way they redirected authority of TOS and the movies after TMP. Anticipating that, he stipulated in his contract that he (or his estate) would continue to receive residuals on everything with the Star Trek name in perpetuity, if he were involved or not.

Yeah, he had some credit like 'executive consultant' or whatnot. Of course, the truth was that he wasn't consulted. At all. For example, the story went that the reason why they used Valeris instead of Saavik in TUC was that Roddenberry felt that the audience would not like the fact that Saavik was the bad guy. Even if that were true (which it most likely wasn't, as Roddenberry was too ill at the time to care about trivialities like this), that wasn't the reason why they didn't use Saavik.

I've never got myself tied up in knots over what Gene would or would not have approved of, especially considering once you learn how many other voices contributed to the germination of Trek in the 60's.

What I love about DS9 is it challenged that vision, while still fighting for it. What happens when you remove paradise from the equation and confront Our Heroes with an entity that doesn't share your egalitarian ideals, nor can be negotiated with in the last five minutes of an episode?

I love the conversation it sparks. DS9 offered different context to supposed bad admirals. They're not always just driven by just being bad but a belief that they have to do these things to preserve the Federation.

Section 31 is just an outgrowth of that attitude. It's another way to fight against enemies of paradise. And there is no obligation to agree with the tactics just because Starfleet officers use them.

Yeah, typically when you see that kind of credit on something, it just means they're obligated to pay the person, but that person doesn't actually have any input. Glen Larson was similarly credited on Nu BSG, but he certainly had no involvement or input on that show.

The story I heard was, though Roddenberry did object to Saavik being the traitor, the actual decision not to use her and create Valeris instead was made by Nick Meyer when it became clear to him they weren't going to get Kirstie Alley back.

I've always been curious about this particular little thing that's in only one draft of the shooting script from early 1991, where Saavik was not only a different character with the same name, but concretely Spock and Saavik's daughter:

Spock: your brother told me all I needed to know about you.

*Computer starts to beep. Spock goes over to it. Uhura is on the viewer. "Sir we got a message from Vulcan trying to reach you. Can I put it through" "You may LT" Spock replies. On the computer a Vulcan male that looks just like Spock shows up on screen. "Greetings Lt. Commander. My name is Spork. I am your twin brother. Amanda and Sarek didn't want you to know about me but logic dictated a need I felt about meeting you, otherwise." Camera pans into extreme closeup of Spock as the soap opera music swells, as he processes the information."

I will reserve judgment until I’ve seen it, but from what I’ve seen so far: yuck!

I think that's the general feedback from most/many of the Trek community, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Peaple often complain about "haters" but honestly message forums were created for fans to give feedback. Not just for final product but for promotional materials, interviews etc. That why we are here.

And I agree, the trailers, interviews and other promotional content has not given me much to be excited about. That's not hating,, it's honestl feedback.

And yes I have not seen it yet but considering ...

- I'm not a fan of the Georgio character and not enthralled by Yeoh's acting

-Have not liked how Section 31 was portrayed on Discovery in general

- Have not liked the interviews descibing the movie as CIA or guardians of the galaxy in space

- Not liked What I've seen so far of the trailers including snipips of dialogue

So it's not as simple as me disliking the teasers and just hating on it....'it sucks!!"

There is rhyme and reason to my criticism to this point.

Can I still be surprised with a good movie? Ofcouse. But its definitely not "hating" for posting about my vibes on the movie, heading in.

Honestly, the promotional content has zero interest from me.

The concept is what intrigues me. I don't think this is the Trek I asked for: I don't want what I asked for. I'm tired of being told to expect the same old thing from Trek.

Judgement reserved for film's release and not a moment before. Promotional materials can burn in Gre'thor.

Which I think is totally fair. Promotion though is something entities pays millions for. Like it or not, it is considered important to a degree. Not just in Hollywood. People for decades have decided whether to buy or borrow a book based solely on the description on the back cover. And I will still watch it regardless. Whether its the Same old true formula or something different, doesn't matter to me . My feedback to this point has nothing to do with it being "different ". It's just honest feedback.
