No offense to anyone who wanted this to be more but, for me... thank god it's a one-off movie. I love Michelle Yeoh, but not in this role with this ultra-silly (and, arguably, world-breaking) idea. Get it out and get it behind us.

The fact that this is a Streaming movie and not a series is great news for fans hoping for a Star Trek Legacy, its a relief. Honest as a movie, I doubt it will be enough to make it world breaking, it might be fun, being contained to what a 45 minute to 2 hour movie?

I'm sure Ira Behr is incensed about this news. He didn't even want to comment on it, but he is not happy at all with the way Sec 31 is being handled. I only hope this movie does not try to portray the organization in some sort of heroic light.

Does Ira have twitter?

Oh, the humanity!

That’s an interesting topic for discussion right there. It kind of flies against Trek’s core humanistic philosophy, for me, to say that there are such things are irredeemable people. Let’s say, even if somebody has the personality structure of a psychopath, as many do, if that person consciously manages their darker impulses and fights only to do good things, to help rather than harm others, couldn’t such a person be considered redeemed? By the choices they make in the moment? Doesn’t mean you write off past crimes; certain things must be atoned for. Yet each moment we can choose to be different. each moment we can be redeemed; whatever that might mean.

I found the Georgiou arc in DSC S3 quite affecting, right down to her returning to the Mirror Universe and realising she was not that person anymore. Her environment had changed her, for the better. That’s just the essence of Star Trek for me. Rather than just showing already perfect people, as in TNG, why not show people consciously moving from dark to light; there’s much more drama to be found there.
It absolutely is an interesting topic of discussion and I'm sure it will be brought forward in the film. I mean, it has to be addressed in some capacity.

As for my own opinions on the matter... while I certainly do believe in redemption and rehabilitation, there does come a point where a line is crossed. All the good deeds or good intentions cannot make up for a lifetime of, we'll say.... extreme ill intent.

The Empress Philippa Georgiou, oversaw an Empire that reveled in their viciousness. Genocide, slavery... they freaking ate people.

So, you understand if I have as hard of a time imagining some kind of arc of redemption for her, as I would imagine some kinda redemption for Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Benito Mussolini, Pol Pot, Genghis Khan, etc.

That all said, I will say that I am extremely curious how they handle this.

Do we care if Ira approves? I'm not trying to be a dick about it or dunk on Ira, just kinda curious. Personally, I'm not a purist about the original intent behind Section 31. I'm fine with letting the concept change with the times.

Maybe she isn't redeemed. Maybe she just works to be better than she was before. Especially since now doing a good thing is a more viable choice for her.
Very possible. I'm just curious how they're gonna handle it. I mean... when you're main character is/was a genocidal maniac.... it may be difficult for an audience to feel anything but contempt for their protagonist.

But, I'm here for it. I've got enough faith in the cast and crew, that we know of, that they'll put out something that at the very least will be interesting.

I mean, ok. Why not?

To use another example, I see pushes for a Darth Vader series and there is a mainline comic all about him working for the Empire and slaughtering Rebels, Jedi, clones and whomever else is in his way.

Georgiou has the ability to grown. If the audience finds her contemptible then so be it. I don't see a problem either way.

Vader, I think is a little different. People WANT to see Vader, the evil bad ass. The end of Rogue One proved that with people cheering as Vader is unleashed upon "Rebel scum". I don't know how else to say it, they want someone being "delightfully evil". Vader was basically that Evil bad ass, right up until the end, at which point he was redeemed, atleast by the force, and promptly died.

But by all accounts, Georgiou is a different story. She's very much alive. We're going to follow her on some kinda journey. Will it be seeking redemption? I dunno. But we're still dealing with a living, breathing "monster" of a human being. We never saw Vader going through the galaxy, trying to make up for what he had done. Indeed in the eyes of the Galaxy, I'm sure he's still viewed as one of its greatest monsters.

I guess I'm just wondering how they create a bond between the audience and their antagonist.

Which irks me. He's not good.
No, he's not. But yet, somehow, Star Wars has managed to make the empire somehow "fun". Which on paper, is crazy. But yet, people love the Empire. Look at those 501st dudes. They love to dress up as the literal Stormtroopers to a fascist dictatorship. Hell, even the name "Stormtrooper"......

It's kinda crazy.

at least they're doing it for good. Charities and stuff.

I like empire's toys, but I don't actually support, you know, their politics.

It's one of the largest groups. It's an interesting dialectic.

I'm disappointed that they're still pushing forward with a Section 31 project, but I'm relieved that it will only be a movie. I just really hope they finally remember that S31 is supposed to be bad and the focus of the movie is about finally demolishing it. Say S31 decided to dial things back a bit after the Control fiasco, they spent the next century working more in the background until the Dominion War, and then Georgiou arrives in the post-Picard 2400s when S31 has started flexing its muscles more overtly again, she teams up with a couple of legacy characters (Bashir please!) and some new characters to take them down.

But it's probably just gonna be an espionage action-adventure with S31 continuing to just be treated like Starfleet CIA.

Section 31 list of executive peoducers are Alex Kurtzman, Craig Sweeny, Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Frank Siracusa, John Weber, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth and Michelle Yeoh.

I get Kurtzmen and Yeoh's names on this as exective priducers, but damn that's alot of executive producers, but I think its still less then Starfleet Academy.

Never mind Gul Dukat, people seem to forget that fan favorite plain, simple Garak was one of the top assassins and torturers of the secret police of a fascist state. He bragged about how good it was at 'interrogating' people on multiple occasions. He barely seemed to regret any of it at all until he repeatedly got his faced rubbed in how horrible Cardassia was.
