IMHO, Star Trek series vary between 90% watchable and maybe 20%, and at various times I gave up for a while on watching each post TOS series if and when it got better, but that's because I could, as missing eps hardly mattered with the big red reset button after every 45 minutes. That being said, sure, you can use cliff's notes to view seasons of Disco like a novel that you only want to read certain chapters of, but IMHO, you miss out on the non-summary callbacks. As far as i can tell each season of Disco will be decent overall, with some ups and downs, but based on reactions, some of those downs for certain people are ups of others. It a lot harder for the series, unlike any other than DS9 during its best years, perhaps to skip a thing. I mean, people go on and on about relationship responses appearing unearned, and they've watched the show, or so they say. If, for instance, that's your thing, then wikipedia isn't going to cut it.
IMHO, Disco, like many shows these days , is something that requires one go all in, because I don't think you can enjoy the highs a fraction as much by relying on summaries to get the whole picture and the intended impact. And of course, depending on what you think you should be watching, that will leave you anywhere between utterly engrossed to screaming at your screen, if fandom is any indication.
Tough call, really, because there is just so much to watch overall, and so little time, and Disco pulled a wringer out of the gate, because you really have to go all the way to Context is for Kings to get an real idea of what the show was going to be last year. And as i could see, waiting that long wasn't for everyone. But for me, even the opening two parter was good enough for me to keep going, but honestly, I don't think one can get a real handle on the Burnham/Empress relationship without having watched Michael and Prime Georgiou interact.
