Spoilers SDCC season 3 news thread!

Didn't we already sort of get the Canon POV on future human naming, though, in "Calypso"? Or was that just a thing Craft/Quarrel's folks had going? "Book" sounds nice in that company - a stickler to rules, perhaps, or an easily readable person (or a complete enigma).

It was certainly pretty startli

IMO, the problem is the 25% of Trek that many people want, and are unhappy until all Trek adheres to their particular 25%. Star Trek covers a vast amount of territory and no producer in the world is going to do everything all viewers want more than 25% of the time at best of times.
No, but Good writing, and Good actors, and Good likeable characters, need to be 100% or near it to be a true hit.
25% only in any of those areas, defeats the whole concept of engaging universally loved TV shows, and becomes something more of an "aquired taste" Star Trek was meant to be more of a universally appealing show, then niche' genre focused. at the time in the 60s, Westerns were the norm in genre terms.
but into the 70s and 80s, scifi was the new standard in universally viewed tv genre, and westerns almost a thing of the past, as the sitcom reigned supreme, and drama categories. TNG Busted the seams, and gave birth to countless spinoffs and all with pretty decent season runs. until we hit ENT.. now, since ENT Trek and the formula changes, music, etc.. The shows in general with Trek as their name, are not as huge a hit as people would have expected. From ENT to STD, voyager partially in that, but still.
The formula was abandoned, and this is also why the new series don't feel like Trek to the majority of fans. in a vacuum, maybe they could have gotten away with this as a new show, concepts never seen, but that still would require good writing, which modern Trek is lacking in. Not to mention characters you like. you want to come back seeing them again and again. Pretentious, annoying, know it alls, and weird cursing freaks are not as appealing to come back to on a long term basis.

Your posts in this thread are like a Markov chain from Doomcock follower comments; purporting to speak on behalf of the majority of fans, "STD", "Bad Robot", "25%", rants with little to nothing to do with the thread topic.

I much prefer the Discovery characters over those of most previous Trek series, particularly TNG. I cringed at hearing that Troi and Riker would be in Picard; they are the epitome of dull, smarmy and unlikeable characters.

"I like the stories, characters, concepts, and everything else about the first four series better than the last two, soon to be three," is all you had to say.

Every Star Trek series besides TOS and TNG is niche. TV programs in general have become more niche across the board. This is irreversable.

When CBS releases their viewing figures, then either way, a citation will be confirmed.

It seems a bit ignorant to be making claims with no statistical data to back them up.

I have my issues with Discovery, I don't need to make false claims to make them seem more important than they are. I'm perfectly comfortable in my thoughts being my own and based on what I see.

First of all, Doomcock is not some deity I follow. Afterall, how do you know they didn't get their point of view from me, it is the height of assumption to infer someone's own opinion is akin to some following a youtuber has, and presupposes that my opinion is not of my own. I can assure you it is my own POV, and I don't much care what Doomcock or his followers think.

As for your opinion on the subject, that is fair. You and I do not have to see eye to eye to be Trek fans.

I suppose I could have shortened my opinion there, that sentence seems to do the trick. I am often prone to long winded sentences to convey my thoughts. It's something I am working on, I'll admit.

When you talk about Niche, it is indeed the way that this is going. every program seems to want to aim at 1 particular demo, while snubbing it's nose at another. Oh well, it is what it is, I suppose. But I would be interested in seeing the numbers behind the series viewership, which would give a metric of how many fans this series truly has, and how many people actually subscribe to it, or importantly how many left over time.

That is a legitimate question. One to date has yet to be answered.

The majority of Trek fans here seem to like it.
A microcosm is not a true measure of success. As I said, I would be interested to see the streaming numbers to confirm the overall fandom's reactions, and compare it to previous series numbers to see how much of an appeal Kurtzman's trek actually has.

I'd like to pass comment on these new trailers and Short Trek things, but because I don't live in the US I'm not getting access to them
Pretty shit really
Still, whatever happens, looking forward to Season 3 of Discovery

I was talking about DIS. Of your list only Georgoiu is a DIS character, but she wasn't so far a main one. Only Lorca had a non English sounding name of the human main cast but he wasn' t around for very long.
Lets put that to the test
Michael Burnham- English last name played by an American woman of African descent.
Gabriel Lorca- Spanish last name. Played by a English-Jewish actor (Main character for the first season)
Paul Stamets- Germanic last name played by an American man of Northern European background
Ash Tyler- English last name. Played by an Anglo-South Asian actor
Sylvia Tilly- Anglo-Norman last name. Played by an American woman of Jewish descent
Hugh Culber- Surname of unknown origin. May be a variation of Culbert. Puerto Rican actor.
Joann Owosekun- Nigerian last name. Actor is also Nigerian
Gen Rhys- Welsh surname. Japanese first name. Canadian Actor of of Chinese background.
RA Bryce- Celtic last name. Actor is a Canadian of Afro-Caribbean background.

Why..., what the Hell difference does it make.
Either one likes the show or one doesn't.

I personally, don't go around basing my interests on a majority (or a minority for that matter) of what other people like or don't like.

SO far, DISCOVERY has been a success in my book and also so far, PICARD seems to be heading in that direction as well.

whoa.. Can't make a negative assessment of the show.. seems kinda crappy to behave in such a way. I mean, 7-8 people all saying the same thing over and over again, doesn't it get boring?? Sheesh! so much for opinions.

Star.... Trek....Discovery is great...

What? you don't like DIS? You call it STD?
Error!! Error! LOL. come on people, we need a sense of humor. This is afterall just a TV show. It's not a cause to die on the hill on.
I swear it sounds like that after awhile. I kinda liked it when diversity of thought was intelligently debated, instead it's knee jerk sarcasm and smart-allec whit, such a shame. Those debates back in the day were epic, and enjoyable. Why can't we get back to those types of thread discussions. Why does it have to be us vs them all the time? It's not fun anymore. Used to be a friendly back and forth. Cordial as if a group of trek fans hanging out and having a few drinks discussing their opinions.
I miss that. wish we could get back to that.
Or I could just be too thin skinned, saying that of course, since I almost expect the proverbial sarcastic response of "It's the internet, grow up" and so on. Funny, I have seen people say the same thing I am saying and that response in so many words has been replied. LOL thread etiquette. So funny how it seems to be the same in so many places.

Anyhow, I can't say I hate STD, all of it. Season 2 for what I watched of it, was pretty cool to see the Enterprise in it. I always liked the Cage Crew. to see Rebecca Romain playing number 1 even if briefly was pretty cool. Anson Mount was a good Pike. Not a fan of Peck.. but whatever.
Young spock.
I guess I can forgive it, but still doesn't feel right, and seems pretty stupid the whole thread line. Didn't he murder some people to escape??

Anyhow. Not sure if I want to finish season 2. I know what happens, and I kinda spoiled myself on the ending of it, and quite honestly, I don't know that I care to see the rest. far far in the future, may be better. who knows.
Sauru was good too, I liked him. The whole miceil network thread seemed stupid to me. sorry, I just am not a fan of these writers. There are so many plot holes and in show continuity from episodes earlier, it's mind numbingly frustrating to sort out.

Spock didn't murder anyone. S31 doctored those videos.

For the rest, I've posted on bulletin boards for 23 years. I've seen it all. I count on certain people not liking DSC. Especially if I've historically disagreed with them. It gives equilubrium. It wouldn't feel right if I was on the same side as them.

Not much to say about an argument that states scifi was a universal standard of anything on TV in the 70-80s. It was niche entertainment then and in many ways still is, as universal standards of anything no longer really exist. PS I was actually there in the 70s-80s, so I remember hardly no one actually caring about whether Space 1999, Buck Rogers or Star Cops got cancelled after a season or 2 - and that was near the best we got at a rate of 1-2 shows a year. Or for an argument that states TNG had countless spinoffs. That might be the case for anyone who can't count past 3. And there's the whole weird cursing freaks condemnation?! Where did that come from. Maybe I'd agree if you were discussing Alien Ressurection, I guess. And anyone watching Disco knows It was made abundantly clear Spock didn't murder anyone.

Didn't he murder some people to escape??
No.

Can't make a negative assessment of the show..
No one has said you’re not allowed to make negative assessments of the show.

Just don’t be surprised if people try to counter them. As I said most people here seem to like the show, which is why you’re getting so many responses disagreeing with your opinions.

You come into a thread on the Discovery board regarding news about S3 and:

1) Cite nonsense YouTubist conspiracy theories (that it's a secret Bad Robot project, that it has to be 25% different, etc).

2) State that you despise Kurtzman and want the current era to be over.

3) Talk about how you had to force yourself to watch the show and that you hate the characters.

4) Claim that the majority of Trek fans share your view that the new series don't feel like Trek.

5) Play the victim when you get the inevitable negative response.

The first point is nonsense, the second and third are subjective opinions which you're entitled to and can't be debated, the fourth is an appeal to popularity without foundation and the last is rather silly given the response was inevitable.

If you want intelligent and friendly debates, try contributing something of that nature. Nothing you have said invites such a response.
