Screen Rant: It's Possible KIRK Becomes Strange New Worlds' New Number One

What the usual turn around from Lt. to Captain in real life?
The path to Captain (CO) is shorter than the path to Captain (O-6). Kirk can be the captain of a ship without having the rank captain, and he can serve on a ship with the rank captain without being the CO (as is the case with contemporary aircraft carriers).

If Kirk becomes Pike's XO, I guarantee there will be folks here saying it has no problem slotting in with TOS continuity.

MENDEZ: You ever met Chris Pike?
KIRK: When he was promoted to Fleet Captain.
MENDEZ: About your age. Big, handsome man, vital, active.
KIRK: I took over the Enterprise from him. Spock served with him for several years.

"Well, it doesn't mean he didn't also meet him before he was promoted to Fleet Captain!"

Next spinoff: "Pike and Kirk -- the Academy Days!"

Because that doesn't automatically make it a problem. It's the quality of the stories that matters more than strict literalism of line by line rereading of scripts. For some, that's important. For others, it is the expectation that TOS be taken completely and totally literally.

As opposed to the books where Spock and Kirk and McCoy all work together? It is the same principle. It just happens to be put in to live action which some how carries more weight of importance in terms of events rather than looking at it and saying "Does this fit? No, then that's OK, I'll treat it differently."

I'm just waiting for Star Trek Babies, where Kirk, Pike, Burnham, Kor, Khan, and Picard are all in nursery school together. It'll be an animated series, of course...

Little differences in details might be easily dismissed. However, Kirk was unaware of the affection and sense of obligation that Spock had for Pike. If he observed the two, it would be unlikely Kirk would be ignorant or there would need to be a contrived explanation for Kirk's ignorance.

I promise I will NOT say “no problem” (I’d say “I don’t care”) ;)

Promotion to Fleet Captain need not be witnessed on screen nor does it preclude Pike relinquishing the Enterprise at a later point in time (for anyone who requires a far stricter adherence to minutiae than I do in their entertainment). See? No problem. (Oops. ;) )

Exactly! The true story is Kirk met Pike when he was promoted to Fleet Captain. Then he was tapped to be his XO, in which capacity he served before he took over the Enterprise.

"Star Trek Babies, we'll make our dreams come true... Star Trek Babies, we'll do the same for you!"

Maybe. Maybe not. Recall that Spock becomes more guarded, and is extremely guarded with Kirk in "Where No Man Has Gone Before" and doesn't share as much information. So, I would say that Kirk might not get the full relationship of Spock and Pike because of Spock's tendency to be more private.

But we see how well that plays with the "CBS says!" and "author intent" crowds.

I don't think Spock is more guarded in "Where No Man...", he's playing 3D Chess with Kirk, smiles broadly, calls him "Jim" and tells Kirk to essentially kill Gary Mitchell. That isn't the issue though. The issue is if Pike, Kirk and Spock are all serving together, Kirk would have to be blind, deaf and dumb to not pick up on the relationship between Pike and Spock.

They'll square off like gangs in Michael Jackson's "Bad".
