Ryan Church's design, don't mince words, what do you really feel?

when it was being built on the surface, the nacelle's would have weighed down on the struts from gravity, pushing them down and straight. Once the ship was free from the surface level gravity of the planet, the stress was released from the struts, and they 'bent' back upwards, hence the curvature.
:shifty:

I think that idea is right 'up there' with the joke notion that the TMP klingons had the spines on their heads because their backbones had been kicked up into their skulls during fed conflicts.

It's alright, but is not even close to the TMP refit Enterprise. That is still the best design ever, hands down. I think we should take a poll which you like best of the three:

TOS Enterprise
Movie Refit Enterprise
STXI Enterprise

That's funny--all the stuff I really like about this ship are just lifts from the TMP refit. The new stuff--the oversized nacelles with jet thrust, the bow-legged engine pylons, the mid-body neck--all screams "meh."

The neck on Church's design is one of the things I prefer to either the TOS ship or the TMP ship; it just looks stronger. The business of the various hulls just sort of dangling off the ends of one another like a Calder mobile just never looked that great.

Of course, then Church turns around and puts the attachments to the nacelles even further toward their front ends. Where's the sense in that?

Actually, not so much! They're almost identically located compared with TOS E- measured from the farthest protruding point on the front of the nacelles to the pylons, it just LOOKS noticeably farther forward with all the texture & lines and stuff.;)

As much as I used to love the Refit, I have to admit I've gotten kind of... bored with it the last few years. I just can't get excited looking at that design anymore.

That said, I think I'd still rank the Enterprises in the order you have them. Although it's probably a MUCH tighter race for me than others here.

I'm pretty sure we've already had at least one such poll in this forum, but if we were to do another, I'd put the TOS Enterprise way at the bottom of my list. I just can't take that thing seriously.

Have you seen Vektor's 'refinishing' of it?

I fell in love with the 1701 all over again when I saw those.

^ Those are definitely cool, but even with the added detail, you still have to have a huge love for retro scifi to really appreciate the TOS E nowadays.

Thankfully I do, but I can certainly understand why others might not.

I feel the same way about the new one (retro-futurism). It looks more like something out of Flash Gordon than Star Trek.

I don't hate it. It works just fine in the context of the film, although I would like to see the surface details altered in the next film to fit its supposed 700-plus meter length.

You're a better man than I, DJ.;)

LOL...:guffaw:I wouldn't go THAT far, Anti. But I can see why you say it, though.
Bottom line, they could've avoided any controversy along these lines at ALL by giving us a just slightly more textured version of THE ORIGINAL SHIP!!!!:shifty:

Oh well, it's all good along as we see Flas- er, KIRK do his thing.:guffaw:

Having said that though, I still like the big new E.

Avoided any controversy? People laughing their ass off in the theater because the ship looks like a plastic toy you'd hang on your Christmas tree wouldn't be controversial? Then again, perhaps it wouldn't. :D

There's nothing, anyone can ever possibly do to avoid controversy. Noone, nothing.
There will always be bitching and moaning no matter what. Hopefully it will be a minority doing it, just like with "Star Trek"

For example, I would be whining if they had given us a slightly more textured version of THE ORIGINAL SHIP !! :p
Granted, I'm not obsessed like some and the whining would be very very limited...but still.

Have you even SEEN any of the remastered original eps??:wtf:

Point taken.

I was never that crazy about it, but it looks okay. It does seem out of proportion to me. Kinda like they approved it too early, but they were on the right track. The nacelles really hurt the design for me, as does the neck which seems too far back.
