Roberto Orci Not Directing Trek XIII

and here's a doozy-

5. Movie ends with the destruction of the Prime universe, spinning out the next series, which will focus on the last survivors of the Prime universe as they emerge in the Abramsverse in the midst of full scale war!

Which would be the worst thing they could possibly do. Destroying the Prime universe will anger ST fans, and I can't imagine CBS would allow it.

Unrelated rumor- J. Michael Stracynski says Warners is going to reboot Harry Potter!
Over J.K. Rowling's dead body.

Most of the "fans" who take issue already think the Prime universe is destroyed, I think. Poor guys.

Sounds like a Hollywood game of Telephone....there will be some new Potter stories on Pottermore, or so I've heard, but that's it.

I agree. That is however not what I, the video, or anyone here is talking about.
You've been talking about everything to do with the movies, and the state of the modern Star Trek franchise, to which my post contributes. This Star Trek isn't just some kind of shallow flash-in-the-pan venture, it is a real effort at creating meaningful, fun adventure stories, that manage to stay true to the vision of the original series: to depict exciting stories that have depth, and to bank serious cash.

These films have accomplished these goals.

I said I liked Trek '09 several times. My criticisms were over Into Darkness and Bob Orci only.
Bob Orci was among those who wrote the script for ST09, for STID, and they gave him the Director's chair for ST3. Obviously he's doing something right.

There's actually a whole back story involving kidnapping hookers and killing them in his basement.

That must have been one of Ebert's secrets to writing so incisively and with such quotable wit: don't digress into what you think are funny stories about murdering women.
Oh boy, it's late 2014, and all of a sudden people are allowed to criticize RLM on the Internet?

Dennis, I encourage you to go check out some old Plinkett-related threads. :)

Collated rumors. Grains of salt may be needed.

1. Decision to step down was Orci's own, possibly due to stress/health issues. He remains as producer.

That was granted but what happened to his script that paramount had approved?
And what happened to the other writers? poor guys

3. Abrams, Burke and Pegg are "begging" Edgar Wright, who is leaning toward yes.

I have no opinion about him tbh
My concern is that they need a director who will get along with the current team and won't want to completely change the tone set in the first movies
JJ is a story teller, this is an unpopular opinion but I actually like him as a writer and director.

4. Badass plot is not true. True plot is moral dilemma story a la TOS/TNG, with crew forced to make a "big decision" while alone at the edge of the galaxy.

That's no spoiler, one of the other writers already said that the story would feature a moral dilemma for the crew whiuch could really be anything

Unlikely.

Orci said that time travel was not considered anyway.

There doesn't seem to be any article there to quote anymore. Searches of THR's site turn up zip.

Looks like someone jumped the gun there.

But the article was really there and it wasn't a fake link? Has anyone else read it?

If true, it would be the most hilarious FU imaginable to everyone glorying over Orci's deposition.

I'd be on board with an Orci-produced Trek series. The pope-hat avatar is waiting!

I'm getting an Alien 3 development hell vibe here and that movie (the assembly cut) was an underrated classic. Through turmoil I think the final product could be something different and intriguing, or laughably bad and I get some good laughs over two hours. Whatever happens it's going to be interesting.

I think afterwards the franchise needs a long breather. Years need to pass. Towards the end of VOY and throughout chunks of ENT there were some great ideas but horrible execution of them. With NuTrek it's the other way around; amazing execution of bland or bad ideas with a great visual package (the only thing going for STID). The whole franchise is so stretched, tired and the latest additions so boring and forgettable. If one wants sci-fi action opera watch Terminator 2 or Aliens, now they hit the mark! But ST was never really geared for sci-fi action.

I don't think any writer, script or director can turn this around. Star Trek needs a massive break, I'm thinking dozens of years. It should have taken this break after DS9 ended, ending on a creative and qualitative high. ST 09 had a chance of resurrecting the franchise but STID was a rehash of the same old and done worse. Nu ST 3 has a mountain to climb if it wants to re-imagine the franchise or lay the seeds for new areas to explore. I say good luck to the writers and whoever ends up directing it.

Put anyone in the spotlight and have people criticize everything they do for several years non-stop then see how they react. Most everyone would react the way Orci did. It's called being human.
Being an asshole = being human?

Wow, talk about the Jonathan Archer school of social sciences.

You have a group of people who think they are impervious due to the anonymous nature of the internet hurling insults non-stop. Over something trivial like a movie they happen to dislike.

Who exactly are the assholes?

If you think this is just something that Orci has somehow set off, go take a gander at the Fan Productions forum.

Public figures should know better than to descend to the level of Internet trolls.

I think that what is acceptable for fandom to say and do is acceptable for those making the material. If they want civilized treatment from the creators, then they can treat the creators in a civilized manner. YMMV.

And it was immeasurably better for it.

Hush. para mobius may be reading this.

Most public figures don't "descend" to the level of engaging with fans. They - or some functionary representing themselves as their employer - post occasionally in public spaces to tell their followers flattering lies. Credulous fans eat that nonsense up.

Criticism can and should be civilized. Otherwise it's just bashing and nerdrage. Pretty much like what Mike Stolaska has been doing through his Plinkett persona.

I wasn't talking about engaging with fans, I was talking about arguing with trolls.
