This has been some sucky news to wake up to.:(

Poor Bob Orci - JJ Abrams gets his dream directing job, and right on the cusp of getting his, it's taken away.

That extremely brief story synopsis doesn't sound great, but I'm hesitant to condemn it - the first Wrath of Khan synopsis talked about Kirk battling for a weather machine, and Into Darkness' first one was in Engrish. Hopefully one day we'll get to read it.

Unless Edgar Wright signs on very soon, I suspect Star Trek 3 is done. It'll be stuck in development hell for awhile and then quietly dropped. CBS will probably announce a new TV series at the start of the year.

:sigh:

Orci was unprofessional with the small number of fans who weren't happy with the last film. I wouldn't define the man by this incident; although, I would agree that it was not one of his better moments.

I think Star Trek XIII may be heading for development hell. I don't know how this will affect the planned release of 2016.

* The production department was shut down a month ago.
* Bob Orci was released as director this month.
* Paramount has "dumped" the script this month.

If the script was the issue, there is a group of professional writers who are called in for rewrites. There is more to this story than what is being reported in the news.

As for directing, I don't think they had begin filming yet when Paramount stepped in. So, I think it's premature to judge Orci's performance as a director. There are a number of variables for consideration on why he was released as director. He is being kept on, along with Abrams, as a producer on this project.

"Small number of fans"? I think you underestimate just how many didn't get on with Into Darkness. The totality of those who disliked it or felt it wasn't reflective of Star Trek aren't just those who post frequently on forums like this.

It showed a fundamental misunderstanding of the fan base and a fundamental misunderstanding of the privileged position he was in. Plus, considering how many well educated Trek fans there are who are, inter alia, doctors, lawyers, engineers, scientists, astronauts and so on, it was just an astonishing level of arrogance that he should pretend he is superior to fans and that he "gets to write movies and they don't" as if he's the only one capable. Nah, sorry. It's an unacceptable attitude that betrays the sort of person his is as it shows his thought process.

It was? Where did this come from?

Possibly Abrams was so tied up with Star Wars that he hasn't been hugely involved in this project. As a result maybe Orci & his team were pretty much left to get on with it and maybe it all turned to hell in a hand-basket. Speculation though really.

I suspect that he is being kept on as a producer more for contractual reasons. Whol thing sort of reminds me of the Superman: The Movie saga, save that, of course, Dick Donner was an experienced director.

Nonsense.

The percentage of movie-goers who thought it wasn't "real Star Trek" and didn't immediately rush home to tl;dr about it is so infinitesimal that it's not even worth mentioning. In other words, outside the interwebz, no one gives a shit.

Nailed it. It was a tempest in a teapot.

Perhaps you can go and find my long rant then.

The alleged script sounds terrible, and it sounds exactly like something Orci would go for. I'm surprised The Borg aren't in it.
Now that would've been fantastic:D

Btw Bob Orci is now on TM.com giving some details:

still excited to makeTrek 3! And on time. We’ll find the right director!
no time travel was ever considered, fyi

So is he still one of the writers or not?

Bye bye trek 2016 ...will be trek 2019 at this point

Orci posted these messages on Trekmovie:

196. boborci - December 6, 2014 I will be very involved:)
199. boborci - December 6, 2014 still excited to makeTrek 3! And on time. We’ll find the right director!
201. boborci - December 6, 2014 no time travel was ever considered, fyi
So he debunked that ridiculous synopsis completely.
