Rings of Power S3/Hunt for Gollum Anticipation and JRR Tolkien Discussion thread

Jamie Dornan - who is best, known, for me, as,Sheriff Graham Humbert/The Huntsman from Once Upon a Time - is actually the perfect person to replace Viggo as Aragorn because they very much resemble one another.

Dornan is quite good in the WW2 actioner Anthropoid. Solid pick.

Winslet isn't playing Marigold, she's playing Marigol. So who knows who that will be?

The Wrap: "One of the key players in the settlement of Stoors – a Hobbit-like folk – is the matriarch Marigol who will be played by Kate Winslet." Probably a relative of Sméagol.

Not sure if I trust that information when Deadline and Variety didn't report any details about Marigol and they'll claim doesn't come from a quote or cited source.

That said, that does make sense on its own.

Honestly, this is starting to feel a little bit like the snake eating its own tail, and it really shows the limitations of the licensing agreement with the Tolkien estate. What's next? A movie showing all of the significant events, and there were plenty, that were happening at the same time as the final battle of the Ring?
I would not be opposed to a movie adaptation of War in the North. 😀

Halvard is Norwegian name (the most notable connection is an 11th century patron saint of Oslo) so the name use isn't surprising considering Middle-earth's roots. I had forgotten about Halbarad (I really need to reread the trilogy again...) and I am a bit surprised they're not using him (assuming Halvard is a Ranger, which would make sense).
I guess they also could have just changed the name up because Halbarad is very similar to Halbrand, a character name used in The Rings of Power, and they didn't want to cause any confusion. But if Woodall's character is a Ranger, there are plenty of Sindarin names they could have used instead.

Because of post #163 I thought they had cast Leo Woodall as Aragorn and I was like, nope, doesn't look right for the part. Dornan is better.

How much access do they have to language use?

More thoughts on Dornan: all fans of WW2 movies, action movies, and both should watch Anthropoid, in which he co-stars. (It's currently available for free on the US public library streaming service Kanopy.) It's a gripping true story, and he's great in it. He's also a damned handsome bloke who, at 43 today, seems about the right age to play a roughly Fellowship-era Viggo (who was 40 at the time of filming). I gotta say, this strikes me as pretty much perfect casting for the situation: he's someone the public already knows, even if only indirectly as "that 50 Shades of Grey guy," but who's not a big enough star to be distracting. Whether the movie will have enough story to justify its existence remains to be seen, but I think pretty much everyone will be very happy with Dornan, and that's a big win right there that I honestly wasn't expecting. Well played, Jackson and Co., well played.

That said, I'm still going to re-post this video, because it's still great: :p

This is Warner Bros., not Amazon. They have access to everything that was published in The Lord of the Rings. So does The Rings of Power, the problem there is the story they're telling is only briefly described in LOTR while most of the details are in The Silmarillion, which they only have limited access to.

Although The Rings of Power is meant to be spiritually linked to Peter Jackson's Cinematic Tolkien Universe, neither IP can directly reference the other as per the agreement that was struck between Amazon and the Tolkien Estate, so there's actually very little chance that the above-posited scenario - that Halvard is a renamed Halbarad due to the existence of the character of Halbrand - is true.

Just catching up on the news:

* great news on the casting of Dornan for Strider! Look forward to seeing his take on the character.

* Very glad to hear Lee Pace is back as Thranduil - infact, would be entirely remiss if he wasn’t returning as the Elven King of Mirkwood.

The hunt is gaining pace! ;)
