These 2 new LOTR movies sound like pointless cash grabs that simply use chapters from the books that didn't make it into the original trilogy. It's like they're just being made to retain the rights or something.
I would normally agree except Colbert's passion for Tolkien is very well documented. If he says he has a story idea that he believes honor Tolkien, then I'm inclined to believe him. These 2 new LOTR movies sound like pointless cash grabs that simply use chapters from the books that didn't make it into the original trilogy. Christopher Tolkien is rolling in his grave.I might be in the minority, but I would be fine with completely original movies set in Middle Earth that have no connection to the books. It's a big world with thousands of years of history, so it shouldn't be that hard to come up with some new stories.
Count me In as one who also loved The War of the Rohirrim. You prefer pessimism, fine. I'm opting for optimism. Especially now.
Besides, I loved The War of the Rohirrim and I know I'm in the minority in that regard. I'm good with that.
I trust Serkis more than Colbert.I would normally agree except Colbert's passion for Tolkien is very well documented. If he says he has a story idea that he believes honor Tolkien, then I'm inclined to believe him.
I'm more hesitant about the Gollum movie but it helps that Serkis is the driving force behind it.

Three and a half pages in my copy.War of the Rohirrim is a little closer since it was taken from what I believe was only one or two sentences in the appendixes.
How do you not get tired of being negative all the time? That's very possibly in large part true. The WB recently paid a lot of money to retain the film rights to The Lord of the Rings and its appendices, and you can bet that if Jackson and Co. ever tell them they're done with the franchise, they'll hire someone else to exploit it without hesitation. It's not hard to imagine how such a situation could lead someone to... compromises in their artistic vision...
Especially when doing so can give one's children a head start in the entertainment business. The War of the Rohirrim was co-written by Philippa Boyens' daughter, and now we hear that Colbert's son will be involved with this Shadow project. I'm sure it's very easy to tell one's self that one is best suited to "honor Tolkien's legacy" when it directly benefits one's own kids. Could both happen to be true? Time will tell.
Why?I trust Serkis more than Colbert.
The orcs in the film are searching for rings, and let's just say it's not because one of them plans to get married.and opens with the LotR musical sting, despite having sod-all to do with either the Ring or Sauron.
It's in the tale of years but it's also covered in more depth in the Rohan section of appendix A and addressed in the Gondor section. In addition there are references to the conflict in both The Return of the King proper ( before the appendices, that is ) and in the text of The Two Towers ( it's not like it's a rule or anything but when you introduce a place called Helm's Deep you're likely to explain where the name comes from ).Oh you're right, I just double checked. I could have sworn it was just one of the small entries in the tale of years. My mistake.
That's effectively what Rings of Power is.
