Rings of Power S3/Hunt for Gollum Anticipation and JRR Tolkien Discussion thread

Wow, I didn't realize Chritopher Tolkien hated the movies that much, I had always assumed he had approved of everything they did with the movies.
He famously loathed them. Even before they were even made, he lamented his father's decision to sell the rights.

How would a Silmarillion adaptation even work? I was under the impression it was more of an overview of the early history of Middle Earth with no real overarching plot to it.
They wouldn't adapt the whole thing as one adventure. Instead, they would focus on certain stories, particularly the ones with more details, such as the aforementioned tale in my previous post.

If they ever actually put The Silmarillion to film, I'd like to see it done as a semi-anthology TV series. Each season would primarily focus on one of the major tales (Fëanor forging the Silmarils and the Noldor pursuing Morgoth into Beleriand; Beren and Lúthien; the Children of Húrin; Tuor and the Fall of Gondolin; Eärendil and the War of Wrath) but storylines involving various other characters would continue throughout the whole show. Movies would be cool, but I think you'd need at least one for each of those big events, and with movies' limited runtime you'd still have to cut out a ton of important material.

Sounds like a Silmarillion movie might not as impossible as I thought, but it does sound like there are a lot of potential ways to do it.

I think a movie adaptation of The Silmarillion would require a quadrilogy of LotR extended edition length movies minimum.

The television anthology idea would probably be best.
I wouldn't be against both. Film for Beren and Luthien, The Fall of Gondolin, and The Children Hurin. Anthology for the less fleshed out stories.

That's why I think there needs to be a quadrilogy. There needs to be a movie establishing Feanor, Morgoth, the theft of the Silmarils and ending with Faenor's death and the consequences of the oath that he inflicted upon his children. Not to mention establishing Valinor, Ungolioth, that whole business with the lamps, the kinslaying, the burning of the boats... That's at least a movie.

One could then include The War of Wrath as part of The Fall of Gondolin as to tell Earendil's tale all in one movie. Boom. Quadrilogy. Done.

When they licensed the TV rights to The Lord of the Rings and its Appendices to Amazon Studios back in 2017, The Tolkien Estate, which was at the time headed by Christopher Tolkien, explicitly and contractually forbade them - and eventual Rings of Power creators J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay - from having any professional contact or association with Peter Jackson and from directly and explicitly tying Rings of Power to the films that he (Jackson) made.
