I think there is a purpose. We just don't know what it is right now. It's revealed itself to be noticed and to be associated with good interventions. It's planting that idea that Spock and friends need to follow it to save the galaxy. If it remained unseen, it would be hard to do its bidding!

I'm guessing that later in the season, the RA makes a big ask, purportedly to save the galaxy, and it'll need to be a be known entity to do that.

Had the same thought last week. Also random and clearly wrong.

Perhaps Spock couldn't mind meld sufficiently through the helmet. Hence his perception of humanity but not identity. He's also never mind melded with Michael as far as we know, so how does he know what her mind would be like?

As much as I think all signs point to Michael and a predestination paradox (like Harry Potter saving himself from the Dementors with his Patronus spell) - and I would be perfectly satisfied with that - I find myself intensely intrigued by the idea of the Red Angel being a manifestation of Zora, Discovery's AI.

But how could she be human? How do you explain that? Well, some other people in other forums came up with an intriguing tie in with events we've already seen this season. What if Zora, having sufficiently evolved to basically be a sentient/sapient individual that can feel loneliness and have a sense of morality and compassion, found a way to take herself into the mycelial network and ask the creatures there to build her a body like they did for Culber. We've seen that with the addition of human DNA an energy being/Katra/consciousness from the mycelial network can be materialized into stable matter in the real world. This is how we can get Zora as an actual humanoid.

But how would she know when and where to jump back? With the help of the Discovery crew who would leave her all the information she would need, and the top secret personal spore drive suit that S31 is presumably developing (Project Daedalus maybe?)?

This would also tie in to the overall themes of faith vs science. At some point the Discovery crew realize they have to leave the ship somewhere in order to evolve its computer and have it be the one to save them all from the impending doom. They will have to be acting on faith that Zora, as the RA from the future, can fulfill what's required of her to restore the timeline and prevent the Federation from being annihilated by S31s rogue CONTROL threat assessment program or whatever the true enemy is.

There's a certain amount of poetry in the thought that Discovery could become an avatar to save its own crew and the galaxy from an AI threat.

Someone mentioned to me that the ship is also a character in each of the Trek series. And that's why some viewers want to see more of it and are disappointed we don't get as many wide angle shots. I was never one for ship porn, but this a perspective I can appreciate. Imagine if it was taken a step even further. Not only does Discovery become a 'person' but she also saves those she was meant to protect, transcending time and space while doing it.

Yeah, this speculation has a ton of holes and is probably not how things will play out, but I think it could resonate on a level that is pretty epic.

Like I said in the post, over-analyzing the etymological origins of character names (especially a character, like Pike, who predates Discovery) leads to nowhere. Multiple original characters were given angelic names in the first season, and a supposed "Angel" appears in the second. I don't think it's a coincidence (well, in-universe, it is).

Although, I did suggest that Pike was the Red Angel at one point.

Well, according to some, Plot Holes are a Star Trek specialty, so this fits perfectly.

This is from the upcoming prequel episode where Discovery visits Planet 892-IV and accidentally starts a new religion. Whoops.

Somebody told me Snopes or another fact-checking site debunked the Dos Equis Guy redshirt theory but I'm going to go with it until I see conclusive proof that's not him standing in the corridor. If it's not him then big whoop, we all got a lot of enjoyment out of the memes. If it was then that's all the more reason to like both Trek and the Dos Equis Guy.

    Win-win!

Jonathan Goldsmith has denied it. Twice. How disappointing...

It reminds me how Victoria Vetri was so long credited for playing isis on the original series, despite her regular denials.

That's why we never see him again. He becomes one with the mycelial network and only the badass of the badass can access once that happens.

Of course, that means that the mycelial network is blocked off forever by Captain Robau.
