Spoilers Rainn Wilson joins cast, as.....

I'm not a fan of Muse. Sure, he's amusing in the episodes, comics and novels he appears in. But that's about it. However, I trust the creative powers behind DSC

Noob question: are all announced actors main characters, or some guests?

It's picked up by Deadline and Variety. If it's a gag, it's an all advised one... you look like a total jackass to your industry if you let yourself be used in a fake casting announcement as an April Fools joke.

And those sites have never been used (willingly or not) in April Fools jokes? I find that hard to believe.

Variety and Deadline's business model depends on them being an accurate source of information. Rainn Wilson's career depends on being seen as someone who is booking actual jobs, not joke ones. There are strong disincentives for all these parties to cooperate on an April Fools Day joke, and if they weren't all cooperating, it would already be retracted.

Also, today is not April Fool's Day.

That being said, companies sometimes do engage in obviously ill-advised AFD gags that end up pissing off the customers and damaging the reputations of all involved (see: Gmail mic drop), so it can't be ruled out completely. It just seems extraordinarily unlikely.

This is far too soon to be having multiple characters from the original series showing up.
TNG (quite rightly) had a ban on recurring characters from the 60s show being featured for the first few years of its life. Discovery is supposed to the big re-launch moment for the whole TV franchise. It should therefore be charting its own course, creating its own mythos and setting up its own universe as much as possible, that stands on its own merits. Maybe once that is achieved a few years down the line people like Mudd could be brought in. Now is not the time.

Well, they were planning on having Harry Mudd on TNG season one, but then Roger Carmel passed away.

This isn't anything that excites me. Could be great, could be terrible. Just when I think of all the things they could've pulled from TOS, Mudd is pretty far down the list.

I guess multiple is not incorrect, but it's just two so far...

To be honest I was a bit uneasy about Sarek too, but as a one off I thought maybe it wouldn't overwhelm the new show . If Mudd's now coming in as well though, that is more a cause for concern.

McCoy was in the first episode of TNG.

Also, TNG was set a hundred years after TOS and was the first (aired) live-action spinoff of the original, so that mandate makes more sense in that context and it had more to prove. The mission statement with Discovery is different, since it's set only ten years away from TOS and therefor it makes sense for there to be some intermingling of characters and events, and it has less to prove as a series since it's had several predecessors now. Also, the showrunners here clearly want to tie it into TOS-era characters and concepts.

I think this is good news. Like others said with the addition of Mudd, the show should have at least some lighthearted episodes. I personally loved the Mudd episodes, and in the same vein the Q episodes in the other series. It gives me confidence they will be weaving in some of the old ST goodness with whatever new spin they will put on Discovery.

On a side note, I think I saw David Gerrold speak somewhere and he mentioned the TNG Mudd episode. It was probably an early version of "The Neutral Zone". In what I recall, Gerrold said that the idea was that the cryogenically frozen people included Mudd or something along those lines.

What sticks out in my mind is Gerrold outlined a sequence where Mudd is revived and beamed aboard Enterprise. When he asks what ship it is and is told, he slowly frowns and says, "Not again!"

Also, let's not forget that the first regular episode of TNG after the pilot was a flat-out remake of a TOS episode.

Not to mention several early episodes of TNG were actually recycled scripts from the aborted "Star Trek II" television project that was to have continued the story of TOS' characters and plotlines.

If Mudd is married at this point, who would play his wife Stella?
Kathy Griffin.

One season two episode and one season four episode were recycled from the aborted show.
