Absolutely freekin' perfect!

Wow, loved the office. Rainn was awesome in it and I'm interested to see his take on Harry Mudd. My guess is, he's some sort of conman, arms dealer that the Federation uses to do things they wouldn't do themselves.

Brings up something else though, Fuller said he wasn't going to use any established characters in the first season of Discovery. Harry Mudd although only in a few episodes is a pretty established in most fans minds. I assume this was an executive decision to get some character that ties into TOS now that Fuller is out of the picture.

Don't forget about Sarek.
I've only seen a few clips of Wilson in The Office, but just from those bits I've seen this seems like some great casting. I wonder if they'll make him grow the mustache, or wear a fake one? I just can't imagine Mudd without the mustache.

And will he do a comical accent like RC Carmel did?

(Side note: I wonder if (prior to Carmel's death of course) the rumors about Mudd making an appearance on TNG were true. Supposedly Mudd would have awoken from cryo-sleep and, at the end, sacrificed himself - "This is for MY Enterprise!"

Part of me wants to not like this, that Discovery should stand on its own, no more TOS callbacks, blah blah blah.

But then the vast majority of me is saying, 'OMG yay! That sounds fun!'

But then another part of me is also saying, 'I hope he doesn't do anything that might contradict his appearances and flashback scenes in Cold Equations...'

I love Cold Equations.

Mudd isn't exactly one of my favorites. I feel that he got enough airtime already in two episodes of TOS and one episode of TAS. I would have preferred a more serious/dramatic character as a regular antagonist. Hopefully this depiction will be less comedic than the original and more of a threat/menace.... like the contrast between Ledger's Joker and Cesar Romero's.

Two characters is 'sucking up'?
Who was the first? I haven't been paying much attention to the headlines lately.

So them touting equality and diversity and then casting a character who was a glorified mysoginist is not hypocritical to you? Ok than.

The point of the character is that he is not the one the viewer is supposed to admire. Heaven forbid a bad guy actually have bad character traits.

I doubt it. That's a Kelvin thing, even then it was just a comic.

Besides, Harry doesn't seem like the type who would have kids anyway.

It was primarily a comic thing, but she was referenced in Star Trek Into Darkness. You're probably right though that she'll remain exclusive to the Kelvin Timeline.

Well... the movie only briefly mentioned "the Mudd incident," whatever that was. If you never read the (non-canon) comic, then it could just be a reference to something that happened with Harry Mudd himself.
