Spoilers Rainn Wilson joins cast, as.....

This is what my face look liked when I heard the news:

Great news, great character, great actor. Looking forward to the return of Harry Mudd!

You know I was thinking this is 10 years before the original. Maybe they might have Mudd the saint and show how he turned to the life of crime and conning people. Maybe there is a little redemption for the character and I do like Wilson. I admit my reaction was overreactional because of my conceptions on the character but they could make him rather interesting in this series. Maybe there is a reason to be optimistic, at least a little.

That could be interesting, although I'm not sure it's necessary to "redeem" him.

Not every guest-star needs to be role model, exemplifying the highest ideals of the Federation. You're going to need antagonists and irritants and trouble-makers to contend with. And characters like Mudd help to keep the galaxy from feeling too civilized or squeaky clean.

Of course there are going to be con artists and other shady characters in the 23rd century, especially out on the lawless fringes of the final frontier, far from home . . .

It was primarily a comic thing, but she was referenced in Star Trek Into Darkness. You're probably right though that she'll remain exclusive to the Kelvin Timeline.

Well... the movie only briefly mentioned "the Mudd incident," whatever that was. If you never read the (non-canon) comic, then it could just be a reference to something that happened with Harry Mudd himself.

This didn't stick in my mind at all, can anyone fill me in on the context of this reference in the movie? Or what happened in the tie-in comic, I'm curious about that as well.

After a little investigation, I find this news is real. Out of all the characters to bring back, they have to bring back one of the lamest and silliest of them all?

And don't lecture me for a second on my disgust with this character. I hated this character back in the 60s when I was watching him on NBC, even back then I thought this character was horrid. (Yes, I'm that old.) I was face palming Harry Mudd before most of you were born. He is the Lwaxana Troi of the original series.

This is seriously apocalyptic news signaling the end of the world is close.

Sulu says to get a certain ship that was "confiscated in the Mudd incident" fueled and ready.

It's that little unmarked ship that Kirk, Uhura and Spock take to Kronos to look for "John Harrison."

I can't remember the details of the comic.

Mudd is potentially a good character, hopefully with more ferengi and less human trafficking. But I'm mostly excited at who is playing him, he will do well.

However I doubt anyone ever said "ya know who we need to see again, HARRY MUDD!" Nope.

A much more grounded criminal character who likes to operate behind Starfleet's back to trade more illicet materials could be interesting enough. He could have contacts with various places Starfleet can't go, dealing in dangerous items, even arms dealing.

Think of how many emerging warp capable races would trade expensive items to gain photon torpedo technology. Or Dilithium to someone who could satisfy more mundane material desires rather than promise utopia with a 1000 page rulebook.

Mudd is "that guy".

Not to mention several early episodes of TNG were actually recycled scripts from the aborted "Star Trek II" television project that was to have continued the story of TOS' characters and plotlines.

Only two scripts, as @Harvey mentions above, were reworked for TNG. Season two's "The Child" (due to the 1988 writers strike) and season four's "Devil's Due".

So is he really "joining the cast" as a regular or is he just doing a guest-spot?

The original article at EW.com just states that he's been cast as Mudd, not that he's joining the show as a regular.

Until further notice, I'm inclined to think that Mudd may just be a guest-star--as on TOS.

Here's a thought..what if they pick him up after his ship is disabled or from a colony? He might be on the ship for several episodes or more.

I wonder if we'll see Mudd's badass K'normian trade ship?
(it's highly unlikely)
I wouldn't call it "highly unlikely since the ship in STID is based on the image of Mudd's ship seen on the view screen in the original version of Mudd's Women, despite it being different in the TOSR version. Also, despite it being a Class J ship, it looks nothing Class J ships as seen in Enterprise.
