I'm going to take a punt that we won't be seeing the start of Discovery's voyage, I think we may well be dropped into an existing ship and crew. So a 'send off' cameo is less likely in my view.

While I'm a bit tired of the whole "Let's drop the audience in the middle of things and make them figure shit out for themselves" trope to start a show, I think you're probably right.

James Cromwell recorded a bit as Zephram Cochrane.

I actually prefer getting dropped in to a ship already established to the TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT approach of introducing everyone. I like it if the characters have past relationships to each other and some backstory. Although the benefit of doing an 'introductory' opening is that it helps exposition be less clunky. Let's sit around and discuss the details of our mission that you're all intimately familiar with already!

Yeah, I prefer the in media res approach. Too many pilots are like the first day of a job or school - a lot of aimless time killing while being introduced awkwardly to strangers.

It depends on how it's done, really. I generally like the approach but sometimes it can be just tiring.

I doubt they'll drop us into the story in progress in a serialized format. The first episode will probably be about how they have to hurry up and launch but the ship's still leaking oil or something. Drama from minute 1. Not like the old series where there's the whole "come in, this is the new Trek. Lets show you, the viewer, around. Here's a tricorder, here's the holodeck...". I love that intro stuff but it slows things down.

I wouldn't actually mind seeing any of the previous actors in the pilot, as long as they're playing a totally new character (like an aged Blalock but don't identify her as T'pol). If Shatner shows up as some random admiral or bureaucrat with 2 lines, no problem. Don't make him Kirk.

I would kind of like to see the information from the datafile in "In a Mirror, Darkly, Part II" made overt. I loved the idea that he became Starfleet Chief of Staff, an ambassador to Andoria, Federation councilman, third President, then died the day after the launch of the NCC-1701. That means he would have died in 2245, ten years before DSC. That doesn't rule out a cameo, if done similarly to James Cromwell's, but T'Pol does probably make the most sense, if Jolene Blalock would be interested.

I'd like a digitally de-aged Q stopping to check them out (without interaction) and then leaving because they're too primitive. "Maybe in a hundred years...". A twist on the sendoff and a promise that we won't see Q again until TNG gets rebooted.

As I wouldn't mind Q appearing in a bigger role in DIS, I hope this won't happen.

T'Pol seems to be the best choice in my opinion. They don't even have to age her so much as Vulcans have a long life span.

Or if they like to go more for what would generate the most publicity, then Shatner or one of the prominent new movies actors like Pine and Saldana. Those wouldn't be able to play their old characters though, because the actors are too old for the roles.

I really don't want to see Archer, and I really don't want him to be referred either, except if it in context of him being court martialed for war crimes and gross incompetence.

I know the writers came out and said that the text shown in Archer's bio on the Defiant wasn't meant to be taken as canon, but given it DID get picked up by the HD cameras and that we have nothing to contradict it, I think we have to assume that the bio for Archer is canon until further notice. As such, I'm really hopeful that we'll see a visual recording of him or something. He's the most likely, given he was one of the Trek captains.

That said, T'Pol makes the absolute most sense given she would still be alive at this point, assuming she lived a full life. At 160 years old, or thereabouts, they could probably get away with just giving her an aged hairstyle, etc. I was actually thinking about this yesterday, whilst watching some special features on the ENT blurays, and at this point I feel an appearance by T'Pol is an absolute must. The serialised storytelling may prevent such an appearance though, which would be a disappointment.

If the show does take place in the Prime timeline, as Fuller alluded to, then T'Pol is an easy cameo for them to include assuming Blalock would do it. I think she would, and it would once again help legitimise ENT in the Trek timeline (though Beyond did that more than I ever thought possible). Recasting roles is one thing, but if they really want to get a large chunk of the fans feeling happy and nostalgic, they really should present us with a character played by the actor who originally filled the role, and T'Pol seems the most sensible choice with that in mind.

Seeing Archer again would be fine - or T'Pol, for that matter. I don't think it will happen.

T'Pol would be the ideal choice fan-wise given how long lived vulcans are, and the actress is right age and still in TV shape, but it feels like ENT wasn't popular enough for her to matter in that way. T'pol could be used later in a recurring role though. One that further develops her character. Also based on that wireframe ship, we've already got an ENT easter egg in the NX-like design.

If they use anyone from TOS, it creates difficulty as to which version to use. And they may still recast these characters yet again for the show.

Whichever Dax was alive at this point might work too. But like T'Pol, Dax could be used for more than a one-off if they wait.

Maybe the doctor/bartender from the Cage enterprise.
