Other series like Trek & Twilight Zone

I also enjoy that show a lot. Well, the first season at least because after that it became somehow ... strange.

The first season was plenty strange, but often in a surreal and philosophical and interesting way. The second was generally just random and rather silly, though occasionally interesting.

That was how I meant it. Though I must admit I only own the first season on DVD and haven´t seen the second one in twenty years.

And Brian Blessed, Sarah Douglas, Bernard Cribbins, and others. Plus a couple of episodes were written by Doctor Who writers.

Doctor Who
is one of those shows I haven´t seen a single episode of. I´m not even sure if it ever ran on German TV.

I'm going to make an odd recommendation: Space: 1999, one of Gerry Anderson's live-action shows ...there was an overall sense that space was a bizarre and incomprehensible realm that challenged our assumptions about reality. (Maybe it could fall into the "like The Twilight Zone" category as much as the "like Trek" category.)

The second season, however, was under new management ... the Freiberger connection does give it a very TOS-like flavor, but mainly like the third season.

Oh, that's not an odd recommendation at all. If the OP wants something reminiscent of both TOS and TZ, Space: 1999 is the best choice ... as long as he's okay with 1970s ambience instead of 1960s.

Men Into Space ... was more near future, and stories were set usually no farther than the moon if I remember right. They tried to present a realistic approach to space travel based on what was known at the time.

Interesting. That reminds me of the original concept for Enterprise Season One.

That would be a mighty big coincidence, don´t you think? I get his official explantion that he excluded "6", "8" and "9" from the registry. But that still leaves more numbers than "1", "7" and "0". And furthermore there was the question, whether to have 3, 4, 5 or more digits in the registry to begin with - that too was an arbitrary decision.

Okay, so the C57D enters orbit at 17:01. Is that the only number in the movie? No. Is it a recurring theme in the movie, a number specifically called attention to? No. It's a single throwaway reference.

Now, I'm not saying it can't have been intentional. But there's no compelling reason to rule out coincidence.

On the other hand, if they had reused "47", then it's something more than coincidence ....

However, it is painfully obvious that the captain J.J. Abrams is not the hero character, but the doctor. Leslie Nielsen portrays the most hesitant and undecided spacecraft captain I've ever seen.

You haven't seen Jonathan Archer? I envy you.

The decline in quality of SPACE:1999 between seasons 1 and 2 is one of the greatest in television history - the loss of the great Barry Morse being the biggest of many factors in that meltdown.

Has no one mentioned Wild Wild West to the OP? Fair amount of casting crossover to both TZ and ST as I recall. Plus a fun genre action show.

Also both Fred Freiberger and Gene L. Coon were producers on it for short periods of time, before their tenures on Trek, and of course there were some writers and directors in common with ST.

Not to mention that Jim West is basically the person Jim Kirk would've been if he'd lived a few centuries earlier. And Artemus Gordon is sort of Spock and McCoy rolled into one, at least in terms of his partnership/friendship with West.

That too! :)

Here are a few that are on my personal 'to watch' list like Twilight Zone that haven't been mentioned:

*The Veil
*Darkroom
*Science Fiction Theater
*Tales of the Unexpected
*Way Out
*Thriller

Shows like Star Trek that haven't already been mentioned:
*Ark II
*Seaquest DSV

Mind you, these shows have varying quality, but I'm trying to watch them myself to see what stories are out there...what could have been done better....etc.

I've seen a few episodes of the 80's Twilight Zone while not as iconic or as memorable as the classic series it still has a few gems mostly adaptations of short stories.
