Orphan Black - Season 2 Discussion

Re: Mister Fandango

Are you responding to my post? I don't remember any point in the first season where it was clear that Paul might be more than he let on (aside from being a former soldier that was disgraced somehow).

The message that Tony gave Sarah revealed that Paul might be working for some outside firm trying to take Dyad down, at least that's what I inferred.

Also no Rachel did not wreck her office after everyone left. The scenes are about how tightly she controls herself, it's all internal.

As to Tony.. my main beef is that all the other clones have some distinct appeal and he is just meh. Also not keen on the makeup, should have looked a bit rougher skinned. He looks a bit baby faced for a hardened crim.

He was still a girl for the first 18 years.

It's not like the man worked on the docks for 30 years.

Man skin doesn't come from hormones

Rough man skin comes from shaving every day.

Longer you shave, the harder it gets.

(Logically then girls must have man skin on their legs?)

Tony started late, he's still at the 13 year old facial pubes stage.

So for ideal baby skin at 50 a man should never ever shave and then magically shave it off at that age. Actually I think this is true. I think I have seen this.

I've been thinking about this episode some more (While watching the other Black show) and have some other thoughts on it.

Why do I get the feeling that when this show is said and done, people will look back on this episode and realize they misjudged it? By that I mean I don't think this is the last we see of Tony and I think he was brought in as a little sneak peak to Season 3, just like how Rachel was brought in as a sneak peek to season 2. I've been hearing so many comments about how this show doesn't need another clone or with all the storylines going on now wasn't the time, and while I agree with the latter, I don't agree with the former. This is a clone show, we know there are so many out there, and we've only been introduced to two this season and one was already dead.

I guess I just have blind faith that the writers know what they are doing. This season did give us some outstanding episodes and scenes, and I'm still thinking about the scene in the shower and the sniper scene. I'm giving the writers the benefit of the doubt. I do wish the season was longer than ten episodes and I really wish the finale episode was two hours long.

To be fair, Tony did bother me until I realized he started out female and only through hormone shots (and who knows what else) changed his sex to a male, that I was fine with the character.

Wait, now I am confused. I got the impression that Tony was a true trans, with male equipment below the belt.

Yeah, that's why I am confuse that Aldo thinks Tony started out as female and used medical procedures to get to his/her current state.

Did I miss a piece of dialog?

He is. But testosterone therapy is part of female-to-male sex reassignment surgery (it enlarges the clitoris prefatory to its surgical reconstruction into a penis, or so says my sex-ed textbook from college). I would imagine that booster shots afterward might be necessary to maintain some masculine characteristics like body hair patterns, voice, etc. So surgery and shots are not mutually exclusive.

Aldo wasn't saying that the shots were the only thing Tony used -- note the parenthetical in his post. He meant that Tony was "only" male through medical treatment rather than having been born that way -- that it's easier to buy Tatiana Maslany playing a former woman who's undergone SRS than it would be to buy her as someone who was born male.
