NYE

I don't really "do" New Year's Eve. Have done a few times in the past; never been all that impressed - too many people out there drinking way too much, forcing themselves to believe they're having fun. So as has been my usual practice for the past few years or so, I'll be giving the parties a miss and having a night in.

Besides, I'll need to start packing for my vacation then since I fly out Sunday and I'm going to be busy for much of Friday and Saturday.

This is why my friends and I always threw our own parties.

My birthday is December 31st, so my roommate and I are having a big ass drunken NYE/Birthday house party. Lots of food, booze and music, looks like around 40 or 50 people will be dropping in, both before and after midnight.

Most of the clubs/bars in Toronto tend to be way overpriced for admission to their NYE events (depending on the place and the "package" you order it can be anywhere from 20 bucks to over 100, though even places that have little or no cover on most nights will still want 20 bucks on NYE).

The idea is to make it affordable for our friends (cost: free) and party with people that we, you know, actually like as opposed to a bunch of strangers in a bar serving tiny glasses of cheap champagne at midnight.

My wife and I haven't been out for New Year's Eve since our oldest child was born, over 25 years ago. Now that the kids are all old enough for us to actually do something, we just don't have any interest. C'est la vie.

I'll be flying to Atlanta Thursday evening, hopefully arriving in time to be with my boyfriend at midnight. :) I come back Tuesday night.

(I was originally supposed to fly out at 4:30 in the afternoon, but that flight was cancelled and I got bumped to the 8:30 flight, arriving at 10:45. Sigh.)

The last time I went out for New Year's Eve was about 20 years ago. I Left my children with a babysitter and myself and my best friend went to a nightclub at Wrestpoint Casino. We left the nightclub about 2am and went out and got on the end of a long line of people waiting for a taxi. We were in the line for 90 minutes and we had much more fun in the line than we did in the Casino. We was standing between a very charming older man called Marcos (a business man visiting from Seville in Spain) and I young Italian man called Daniel. Marcos regaled us with stories about his country, Daniel was a much quieter person.

I remember their names because two of my sons are Marcus and Daniel.

Last time I was on on New Year's Eve was 2 years ago. We were at a black tie do with champagne cocktails and canapes and a magician at the diners' tables. Dancing til two... and then the long walk home! It was magical. :adore:

One of my friends who lives in Chicago is actually driving out to Dubuque for New Years, and I can't figure out why.

Because Dubuque is an awesome city. :)

I'll take your word for it. I've been there once and had a miserable time.

For someone who drinks as much as you, I would think that Main Street or Central Avenue would have been right up your alley. :p

What on Earth did you do that you had such a miserable time?

Staying in with my husband, eating fun foods and watching a movie, hopefully District Nine which we haven't seen yet.

We haven't been out in over 25 years either. We use to do it all and it lost its shine a looong time ago. Most New Years Eves i am asleep before midnight. Like someone else said, gee....the clock strikes midnight all the time...whats the big deal?

I prefer to stay sober, stay in and stay safe.

The actual changing of the years thing is no biggie for me. A totally artificial thing with no meaning other than a new number. But, I do enjoy all the festivities and parties! :) So, enjoy the good parts and have a good time with friends and family!

I'll be indulging in the same routine that I have for a number of years now: Chinese Food and Three Stooges Marathon.

When I was young, I usually spent it with friends in Hartford or New York, though I never went to Times Square. I also did First Night a few times, which was fun enough, but riding the Red Line on New Year's Eve is the stuff of nightmares.

3 Stooges Marathon. I think I'm in love!

Oh god. We did Times Square one year. I'd rather put a gun to my head these days than subject myself to that sea of humanity. Plus these days i would be a nervous wreck worrying about some crazy terrorist loon.

No, I haven't been pressured to endure enforced socializing that I don't want since my mom died.

It's probably better than doing Trafalgar Square.

A friend is doing the whole Trafalgar Square thing this year. I really don't get it. There's basically nothing there apart from a big Christmas tree and (I think) a giant display screen showing the fireworks that take place near the London Eye. And yet, she's still planning on going there. All you get to do at Trafalgar Square is get squashed in an oversized crowd of drunken revellers and then freeze in the cold afterwards while trying to get back home on an overburdened transport system. Can't think of a worse way to spend New Year's Eve, in fact.

Last time I "did" New Year's Eve (or Hogmanay as we civilized folk call it ;)) it nearly broke my heart. I'll try and not "do" it again for a bit.

Workin. Will be sharing lukewarm sparkling cider with my night shift coworkers at midnight. Just like last year.

Time and a half pay tho. :techman:

It's my birthday so I always get to eat and drink for free.

Thanks, mom, for letting me exit your insides on such a fine day.
