NuTrek's big, controversial premises

If it says ‘Star Trek’ on it and it’s an official production, it’s Star Trek. End of. There’s loads of it that I don’t like very much, but I don’t get to decide if it’s ‘real’ or not beyond my own so-called head-canon.

To me, DSC, SNW and SFA take place in an entirely different continuity. To me. I know that’s wrong, I wouldn’t tell others they must adhere to what I think is right. But that feels right to me.

Everything from TOS-SFA is Star Trek though.
Let's be fair, Star Trek has done the multiverse and time travel variant thing for a long time, so the idea of them not all taking place in the same continuity really shouldn't be that hard if a stretch.

ENT-->DISCO-->SNW--> forward are all post Temporal Cold war interferences and factions trying to get things to go their way. It's not a stretch to have these things get tweaked all down the line.

I have done to the same to Picard season 3 and Prodigy and prioritised STO. I use the odd bit and piece from them just like the novel continuity to create a frankencanon, I know full well it doesn't apply to the rest of the world but the rest of the world is not rattling around inside my little noggin. Just me.

I don’t know what to do with PIC. In Season 1 they have a DSC Connie, but then they walk it back with a TOS Connie in Season 3.

Why ‘dey do ‘dis?

Without meaning to sound dismissive, I don’t like to give it more thought than it really warrants.

TOS-ENT+PIC, PRO and LDS is one thing.

Kelvin is explicitly a branch off of that.

DSC, SNW, SFA, another thing.

To me, I add, to me. Before I get dogpiled or whatever. I know it’s wrong.

It’s all Star Trek though.

It's all on my mood at times. TOS is always a separate thing to me though. TMP, TNG, DS9, VOY and Enterprise, to a degree, feel separate.

But, again, I maintain that if I'm thinking about larger continuity while watching a show then I've missed the point of entertainment.

Obviously, this is my thing. But Trek doesn't all hang together perfectly. It hangs together well but that's about it.

I salute you and your attitude would make the fanbase a far more harmonious place.

I do have a querie, not a criticism just a curiosity. How does the crossover factor in for you? I know it's a SNW episode but they do mention it in Lower Decks as well. Or is the line about "the Pike thing" just a throwaway line you can easily look past?

TOS could easily be made into a separate thing and works quite nicely as such.

What you said though, about missing the point, is quite right.

I hope all is well with you these days. You seem more miserable than usual which… well, you’re not usually Mr Sunshine so a little bit worried.

Yeah, the crossover makes it muddy.

In that case I just get on with it and enjoy it. It’s a good episode.

Why ‘dey do ‘dis?
IRL explanation, it's a production error done by somebody in the graphics team who made a mistake.

In universe explanation, Lower Decks solved it for us inadvertently.

The end of ST:LD had the establishment of a permanently open parallel universe gateway by the end of the series.

2380–2382 AD = ST:LD
2399–2402 AD = ST:PIC

ST:PIC takes place much later in time within the Prime Universe, so they benefit from about 17 years of time for Starfleet to visit numerous parallel universes and make contact with their counter-parts in said universes.

They could've easily visited the DSC/SNW universe and discover how their connie was much bigger than our connie and brought back the data as a hologram to show the public of the discoveries within parallel universes.

That could be a easy marketing win to recruit young cadets at SF HQ.

"Join Starfleet, you can travel the multiverse if exploring the stars becomes too boring for you".

That is a long ass story but things are looking up. I do great appreciate the check in

I see you look at it as three timelines just like I do.

So, I'll tell you what I did with it: I just wrote off the appearance of the Disco 1701 image in PIC Season 1 as an error and left it at that.

I’m in happy times these days so I could bear a little extra weight. If you need to offload anything, you can always PM me.
Unfortunately it doesn't give me the option but feel free to PM me :)

I tried to PM in the past because I had a question about Vietnam but that's long since slip my mind 😆

Meh. I feel the whole "alternate universe" thing creates more questions and problems than it solves. The only way I would ever go down that route would be as if every single show existed in its own alternate reality. Maybe sometimes even split them up by season. TOS and TOS movies would also have to be separated. Far too much trouble.

  • 1. TOS/TAS/TMP.
  • 2. TWOK-TUC/Berman-era series except Enterprise/TNG movies/Lower Decks/ProdigyPicard.
  • 3. First Contact/Enterprise/Discovery/SNW/SFA.
  • 4. Kelvin Timeline.

And all are closely related, broad strokes are generally the same, details are different.

I quite like the mistake angle, but it was clearly a very deliberate choice, much as the TOS version was in S03.

Why? Both versions are clearly supposed to exist in what CBS calls the Prime timeline.
