Re: First time impressions from the Babylon 5 virgin

^^
I'm ready for the commentary. Just finished off Crusade tonight...

Crusade: "Appearances and Other Deceits"

There's nothing extra-special about this episode's plot--name the half dozen Star Trek episodes that share a similar premise--but there are enough good moments that I was able to enjoy it. First, there's Mr. Welles (*cough*Neroon*cough*), making a reapparance here for the first time since he was introduced in "The Fall of Night" (a subtle nod that he got away with being part of night watch here when he mentions being able to get out of any political situation). Second, Max is humanized just a little bit more (and his friendship with Dr. Chambers continues to show up more and more--I wonder, was JMS planning something with these two?). There were a few other moments, but I can't remember them off the top of my head. Still, nothing that screamed "this is stupid," except for the other PR guy onboard (The one who was not Not Neroon).

Of course, the uniform change subplot pretty much throws a flaming monkey wrench into any hope of finding a semblance of continuity for these 13 episodes. They clearly say that there are four years left to cure the plague here-- but I'm sure that they said five years in at least some of the ugly uniform episodes.

Finally, as a final episode of the series, seeing Gideon write a letter to the crew-members who have died shares a certain amount of symmetry to the series' death.

Grade: B+

Re: First time impressions from the Babylon 5 virgin

Thanks for the synopses, chrisspringob

Sadly, I won't be able to join the live commentary. I'm moving this weekend, and plans got bumped up a few days, tonight's a little too crazy. I'll pop in and read it later though. Have fun, all.

Re: First time impressions from the Babylon 5 virgin

As it happens, I'm also moving this weekend.....well, technically, I'm moving on Monday. But I've already packed away my DVD player, and it's too much of a hassle to pull it out again. (Plus, I've got a lot of stuff to take care of before I move.) But I'll probably read through the live commentary, and maybe even post in there, even though I won't be watching the DVD at the same time.

Re: First time impressions from the Babylon 5 virgin

^ just randomly, i have some friends who are also moving this weekend. it's not the end of the month - so what's up with all this moving?

oh, and i don't like them enough to skip watching this DVD to help lift heavy boxes :)

Re: First time impressions from the Babylon 5 virgin

My job doesn't start until the first week of September, but I'm moving all the way across the country, so it'll take me a while to get there. :)

Re: First time impressions from the Babylon 5 virgin

So, who's ready for this live commentary? I've got my DVD ready to go. Just give the word.

Re: First time impressions from the Babylon 5 virgin

here. Z-minus 16 minutes...

Re: First time impressions from the Babylon 5 virgin

ummm... z-minus 3 minutes. where is Neroon?

Re: First time impressions from the Babylon 5 virgin

Where is... everybody?

The extra features on this DVD are pretty cool. Certainly more than we ever got with the season sets. I can't believe they shot interviews with all the principal cast (or at least most of them) and only ended up with a few short 5-10 minutes docs per season.

Re: First time impressions from the Babylon 5 virgin

can you have a live viewing if no one is alive it view it?

Re: First time impressions from the Babylon 5 virgin

A philosophical question for the ages.

Echo...echo...echo...

Re: First time impressions from the Babylon 5 virgin

Folks, i got a message from Neroon that he can't make it.

Does everybody have their disk in and on the main menu?

Re: First time impressions from the Babylon 5 virgin

I'm on the main menu now, Jan. Good to see you here!

Re: First time impressions from the Babylon 5 virgin

The sooner we get this show on the road, the better for me. Haven't had dinner yet.
