Tom, I can ask you this now... how did you view Claudia Christian's performance as Ivanova in her scene at the beginning of "Rising Star"?

I think it was the greatest performance she did while on Babylon 5. It was riveting

^^
It seems like just as she was finally getting comfortable in the role and doing some excellent work, Christian leaves the show. I haven't seen season five (or Rising Star for that matter), but I just can't look forward to Lochley with that much excitement. I understand that their were lots of reasons for her leaving, and it's just a mess finding out who is really to blame, but I can't help but feel a sigh of disappointment to see her gone at this stage of Babylon 5.

Oh she was in my estimation comfortable in the role long before that scene... but it was indeed a well-written one that allowed Claudia to go off in a way she'd never had the chance to before.

^^
I'm a bit of a Christian-hater to be perfectly honest, but even at that, in the final episodes, she was great. Far cry from the cringe-worthy stuff from season one.

The way I looked at it was that she was new to the station, and a relatively young officer. Consequently earlier on she was much stiffer and more "starch-pressed". She began to loosen up much more with S2, perhaps because of the introduction of Sheridan.

Mind if I ask what it is about Claudia that has turned you off?

^^
Just the way she delivered lines, especially early on. The scene where her father dies comes to mind. It should have been poignant, but as it is, her performance just makes me squirm. At least, that was my first impression. We'll have to see what a second viewing shows.

I do think a lot of my criticisms are a result not of bad actors per say (for the most part) but bad directors. I'm glad Mike Vejar came onboard, because the guy who directed The Gathering and several first season episodes was clearly either inept or just way out of his league.

In The Beginning
Despite having virtually no surprises, other than surprise appearances (Ivanova), this was an excellent movie. It's right up there with the best episodes of Babylon 5. It was interesting seeing the whole story for the first time. It nicely filled in the pieces set up by Atonement, And The Sky Full of Stars, and War Without End. It also had a nice twist at the end with the tie-in to Sheridan's incarceration by Londo in War Without End. Actually, there is one unanswered question in this movie, I still don't know why Sheridan and Delenn are being held in prison by Londo. I hope this is answered in Season 5. It may have been answered in War Without End, but I can't remember. Susan Ivanova's presence in this movie took me by surprise. As did her new hairdo. I wasn't expecting to see her until Sleeping In Light, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Next is No Compromises.

Tom, sorry... that particular question is not answered anywhere on screen. You'll need to read the Centauri Trilogy by Peter David for that one.

Richard Compton directed the pilot and he's a pretty genre experinced director.

Weird. I still think his work on Babylon 5 was sub-par. But that's just my two cents.

B5 was a hard show to get into back when it first started I watched from the pilot til the end, but I know it was difficult getting other people to watch the show, it just had a different look and feel especially if you were used to the Star Trek shows and even for me it took a while to match up the characters and the various races. The Gathering had alot of info to getto the viewers but not IMO much a sotryline which even JMS commented about once.

No Compromises
The first episode of Season 5 feels like an episode from Season 1. I don't know if it's the stand-alone-ishness of the plot, but that's what it felt like. Just to let you know, I liked Season 1 a lot, so I'm not saying this episode is bad. It is good, but it had no real mysteries and plot threads left open. This is just your average, run of the mill episode. Of the new characters, it's only been 1 episode, but I like both Lochley and Byron. Lochley seems similar to Ivanova but more mature, and it's tough to get a read on Byron so far.

"Do you want to be President?"
"uhhh.. yes"
"Put your hand on the book and say 'I do'"
"I do"
"Fine. Done. Let's eat."

Tom I don't want to colour your perceptions either way on S5. To say that it has its detractors is... an understatement. But give it a chance and let us know what you really think despite what anyone else might say.

I think my Babylon 5 season four DVD set came in the mail today, so hopefully I can add some reviews of the last couple of episodes I haven't seen yet soon.

Excellent! I forget if the S4 bloopers are on there or not. I think they are but as an easter egg.

Rising Star

I haven't seen Sleeping in Light yet, but I have the feeling that if I never do, I'll still be satisfied with this episode as a beautiful coda to the universe of Babylon 5. It's a shame that the Telepath War and the Drakh War won't be seen beyond a few fleeting moments in the following season, movies, and Crusade, but somehow, everything still feels complete. Garibaldi and Lis are finally together on Mars. Mars is free. Delenn and John are finally together. John's father is safe. The interstellar alliance has been formed, and John is their president.

I've got to go to work now, so the finale will have to wait. I've had mixed feelings about this season, but Rising Star hits all the right notes. It was a new age. It was the end of history. It was the year everything changed. To know that a show could go from The Gathering to this is amazing. I finally understand why so many hold this show to be so special.

Agreed. Christian was incredible in the episode. She grew immensely as an actress on the show.

"Rising Star" woudl indeed be a pretty satisfying end to the series..... but trust me on this. "Sleeping In Light" is I think moreso. It provides B5 fans with whatb they needed most. And that's all I can say there. :p

^^
And I was soooo happy saving the 30 bucks on season five. ;)

(Read: It's the first thing I'm snatching when I get my next paycheck, that's for sure)

The interesting thing is that SiL works no matter if you watch season 5 or not. Not perfectly well, mind you.... but well enough that as a real Babyloniac I would love it no matter what I had seen before.
