And agreed on the "stage play" comment. I've never been able to pin down why it comes across that way, though.
That was deliberate on JMS's part. He has a theatrical background and deliberately hired people with that same background for B5. He also postulated a more formal mode of speaking to be the norm in that future which contributes to that feeling.

Wow that is very interesting. Surely a rather risky business, presenting a sci-fi show in that manner. I like that most lines seem to have weight to them.

So far I have heard zero technobabble.. I hope it stays this way!

Maybe after a dozen more eps. I haven't read enough of this thread to see how redundant season 1 reviews would be.
Reviews from new viewers aren't redundant and those of us who've seen the show multiple times enjoy them a lot. For people who love the show, it's the closest we can come to reliving our first time. B5 is one of the few shows that rewards multiple viewings but the first time, when you're just seeing relationships and foreshadowing for the first time is *special*.

And always remember that precisely what you feel - good or bad - is what people are interested in hearing.

The Exercise Of Vital Powers
Garibaldi goes to Mars to visit Edgars. There he finds a kindred spirit in his distrust of telepaths. Meanwhile, Franklin, with Lyta's help, awakens the telepaths in cryo-sleep. No idea what Sheridan's plan is for these telepaths, but judging from Franklin's reaction, it's something big. Garibaldi is now going to lure Sheridan to a trap, part of Edgars' plan to depose Clark. The mysteries deepen and the plot continues...

The Face Of The Enemy
This is one of my favourite Babylon 5 episodes. As a poster said above, I believe it was Hirogen Alpha, this is a very hard episode to watch because of Garibaldi. Jerry Doyle plays his character perfectly, so that by the end of this episode, we feel so much sympathy for Garibaldi, and what he was put through. He is now utterly alone. Bester being one of the kingpins behind the idea was something I predicted way back in Whatever Happened To Mr. Garibaldi but it still came off as a very satisfying ending. I really like how in the Babylon 5 universe, evry bad guy can also be seen as a good guy from another perspective. Edgars, for example, is absolutely correct that the telepaths are a problem that has to be dealt with. Making a virus to kill them all is a little extreme, but what other way would there be to get the telepaths out of the way? ISN is really getting annyoing aren't they? That anchor is really starting to annoy me. It shows you the power of propaganda. Sheridan is now being held by EarthForce, but what do they have in store for him?

Intersections In Real Time
This is my single best episode of Babylon 5 (so far). I love how this episode, in entirety, in the interrogation chambers. Lots of realities bending in this episode. In fact, is the whole thing with the first interrogator in Sheridan's mind? If not, what's the deal with the Drazi? Is he real? Or working with the interrogators? Or has he been brainwashed? I'm leaning towards the everything is in Sheridan's mind end of things though. Anyway, this episode is the most powerful episode of Babylon 5 so far. Amazingly good.

yeah ISN is so embedded with Clark's dictatorship...Especially that new anchor woman who lies in front of camera as if it is most natural thing in world with a most fake smile in her face....

Between The Darkness And The Light
I have to say, it sure is nice to see Garibaldi on the good side once again. It's also nice seeing Londo and G'Kar continue to work together for a common goal. Sheridan is back and he has a beard. Is it safe to say he won't be clean shaven for the rest of the series (minus In The Beginning of course)? Now, I know that Claudia Christian is no longer on the show starting in Season 5, but I never thought they'd actually kill her off. Now, there maybe some kind of miraculous cure sometime in the next couple episodes and she won't die, but I doubt it. This was a sad episode because of Ivanova. I always liked her character, and I liked looking at her character as well :p. I'm very sad that her time has come to an end. I doubt she'll be walking anymore after this episode, so I guess it's farewell to the real Ivanova.

^ This episode has some excellent Garibaldi quotes in it, too.

"Now a headache I can get over. I am not sure I am going to get over being dead anytime soon."

"I just realized I need more fiber in my diet".

As for Ivanonva...... well, you never know. :D

Well, I broke down and bought season four used on Amazon for 28 bucks or so. Should be here in a week or two, after which I will provide reviews of the last couple of episodes that I haven't seen, and then (may or may not) move onto season five. We'll see. I might even start from the beginning with a friend in order to hear his feedback.

It's intriguing thing to here the thoughts of someone rewatching the series. Frequently they will notice things they hadn't before, sometimes items not on screen. By that I mean how perceptions can change about a particular episode, opinions going up or down.

^^
I hope that's the case, as I hated, hated season one (except for a few) first go around. Of course, I have to actually finish the thing for the first time before I can start again, so I'm getting ahead of myself.

I know I've always found something new, or something different to keep track of, each time I've rewatched the series (which would be five or six times now, I think - I've lost track :D). It's one of the many things I like about B5.

Hirogen Alpha, you'll have to let us know what you think of season one whenever you get around to rewatching it. Usually people find it much better (for example, noticing that lots of things are set up in some of the earliest episodes) once they've seen the whole series.

Season 1 is definitely much better after seeing the whole series through. I've watched B5 many times from beginning to end. It is a great series. It has problems but the story overcomes those problems.

In fact, I'm halfway through season 5 again.

Well, I guess all you who've watched up to Endgame got a good laugh . Even better is this little gem I wrote in the same review:

JMS fooled me big time. I had no idea that Marcus would be doing what he's doing, healing Ivanova with a "miraculous cure" so that she can live. This episode was awesome! It was a much more satisfying conclusion to a war as compared with Into The Fire. There was lots of action, most of the characters were put to good use, and it didn't have Sheridan talking his way out of it. No, instead Clark turns the defense grid against Earth and then shoots himself. A fitting end to a madman. I would have liked to see a duel to the death in person between Sheridan and Clark, but that's just a fantasy . The ending with Marcus standing over Ivanova is left open, but I don't think Franklin will get to him in time. That machine has been more important than I first thought when it was first seen in The Quality Of Mercy. Since then it's been used to save Garibaldi and now Ivanova.

I guess this is the end of Marcus, so I might as well post my thoughts on his character. I like the character of Marcus and I'm very sad to see him go. I would have liked to see more of his back story and more about his brother. I also would have liked to see the Marcus/Ivanova relationship reach its fulfillment. Instead, in the same episode they start falling for each other, Ivanova gets fatally injured, and the rest, as they say, is history. Marcus, you will be missed :(

In fact Sheridan had another good speech in Endgame. The background music during speech and final battle was great.

Yeah what Marcus did was so....I don't know

As I said before I liked "Into the Fire" finale a lot. If it had been a classic sci-fi aproach , the Alliance would be able to defeat ultra powerful aliens barely with one mighty final battle. Cliche ending. Like boss level of somekind of game. Instead JMS used an unusual and much more logical thinking ( under those circumstances ) in ending that war. While both sides ( Shadows/Vorlons ) were fighting for what is right/best for everybody , Sheridan showed them they have lost their way. Instead they became worst enemies of younger races. So they have lost their right to guide them. And all other races learned this. So when Sheridan showed this they ( Shadows/Vorlons ) left. There was no evil side. It was a gigantic misunderstanding....( war usually is ) It was a very original and different finale and that's why I liked it.

But of course the preferances of everybody is variable...Still I am glad you liked Endgame. It is one of my favorite finals also.

Tom, in the next episode you are going to be treated to one of the series greatest individual performances in one scene. It will move you deeply. I can't really say much more, but you can probably reason out what happens.

Rising Star
This episode seemed like the epilogue of Season 4. The aftermath of the war with Earth. There were lots of good things, especially Ivanova's breakdown, the Interstellar Alliance being formed, G'Kar and Londo's continuing "friendship", Lennier's hidden feelings for Delenn, and Garibaldi's reuniting with Lise. The performances were excellent and the writing was great. It's very sad to see Ivanova go, but at least the producers didn't kill her off the show.

The Deconstruction Of Falling Stars
I have a question regarding this episode: When exactly was it filmed? The reason I ask is because during the 2362 portion, a clip is shown of Garibaldi, beaten and battered, talking with some individuals off screen. Then Sheridan contacts them and mentions Captain Lochley. Is this clip from an episode in Season 5? Or did they film this at the end of Season 4, before filming began in Season 5? While the previous episode felt like the Epilogue of Season 4, this episode feels like the Prologue of Season 5, despite it being the Seaosn Finale of Season 4. It sure whet my appetite for the things to come :). The ending was also nice, seeing the humans reach a stage of evolution similar to the First Ones. Jason Ironheart's "see you in a million years" has come full circle.

Season 4, as a whole, is my favourite season of Babylon 5. Yes, even beating Season 3. Now, I've read posts concerning the poor quality of Season 5 compared to Seasons 3 & 4, but I'm looking forward to it anyway. At this point, I'm so invested in the characters, that whatever the quality of the show, I'll be watching.

Next I'll be reviewing In The Beginning, then it's on to Season 5.

A little bit of B5 lore is that JMS had been told that there wouldn't be a Season 5 early in S4 because the PTEN network had folded. Though he still hoped to take it to another network (and ultimately did), he filmed the final episode 'Sleeping in Light' as the final episode of season 4. When TNT did pick up B5, 'Sleeping in Light' was moved to the end of season 5 and 'Deconstruction of Falling Stars' was filmed as the first episode of S5 but aired as the final episode of S4.

Clear? :-)

Tom, I can ask you this now... how did you view Claudia Christian's performance as Ivanova in her scene at the beginning of "Rising Star"?
