NFL 2023: A different shade of green for Aaron Rodgers

Texans fan here, you and me both have to wonder about our rookie QBs this year. Before the draft, I emphatically did NOT want either Young or Stroud picked with our #2 pick. I wanted the Texans to trade down and get Richardson. LOL

Week 2 we get to see them battle each other. Texans have an injured and makeshift O-line to start the season, but we do have a couple of decent RBs, if the line can open holes for them.

Let's just hope Trevor Lawrence and the Jags aren't dominating the division for the next decade!

Huge win for the Lions, but man Mahomes' supporting cast let him down. Toney was particularly awful. They need Kelce back ASAP.
Yes, but if you anchor your entire team around one or two star players, as opposed to a more well-rounded approach of development and distribution, you're doomed to fail. Just look at the post-Manning Broncos. He wasn't gone a year after their SB50 win back in the 2015-2016 season and, while they started off fairly strong, they gradually fell apart due to some pretty bad injuries and really never recovered. The coaching staff was unable to adequately compensate for Manning's departure and rewrite their playbook to make things happen.

I'm starting to see history repeat itself with the Chiefs now. You can't keep running the quarterback when the other players aren't pulling their weight. The defense was doing fairly well, blocking a number of critical passes, but the offense folded a little too quickly, forcing Mahomes into a bunch Fran Tarkenton-like panic-scrambles. He performed well, but should never be put in that position consistently. His receivers missed a LOT of big passes, dropping them or bouncing them off their fingers when they should have had them. If things keep going the way they are, Mahomes will likely go the way of Mike Vick or RGIII. Running QB's have a horribly short shelf life and burn out way too fast from career-ending injuries. That would be a needless tragedy for such an insanely talented player.

I think this is a little dramatic; there's no reason to think "things will keep going the way they are," it's been one game. The starters had almost no playing time in the preseason, the team looked out of sync. There's not a lot to take away from it at this point. A receiver makes just one timely catch and the result is different - meaning we're not even talking about this. Plus, Mahomes isn't your typical running QB - he's well-known for getting out of bounds and avoiding hits after big gains. What's more, you can't compare Andy Reid to the post-Manning Broncos coaching staff. He has a proven track record of getting the most out of a versatile array of weapons.

The likes of Toney and Moore will improve; McKinnon, Pacheco, Rice, MVS, and James will get more playing time. The Chiefs will be fine. What you're saying could be valid if Mahomes was a first or second-year QB, he's not. We've seen what he and Reid do, year after year. The receivers had a subpar game, it happens.

Granted - I will definitely concede it's too early to go all

on everything. Just some interesting observations based on prior-established history I've seen in other teams in the league. :)

Never heard of the EPA stat (expected points added) before, but apparently Patrick Mahomes taking a sack Thursday was a -1.7 EPA and throwing to Kadarius Toney was -2.19 EPA, meaning it was worse for the Chiefs to target Toney.

They're taking after MLB with ridiculous stats.

Basically, it means "target Toney three times and the other team scores a touchdown, that's how worthless the plays were."

They're taking after MLB with ridiculous stats.

The only NFL advanced stats that are complete hoodoo are advanced defensive metrics, because they're all qualitative and impossible to quantify. At least MLB advanced stats are rooted in actual, quantifiable mathematics.

At least MLB has finally moved away from thinking that pitcher wins and batter RBI are meaningful statistics.

Pretty bland slate of early games for Week 1. Maybe Patriots/Eagles can rescue the day.

49ers looked steller in their week 1 win. I was nervous because it was Pittsburgh, but the 49ers took over that game early and fought off any threat Pittsburgh was willing to throw at them. I was impressed.

Yeah, I'll know how I feel about this weekend probably right around 11:20 PM EST tonight.

I probably asked this before, in last years thread, but is the lack of a fourth preseason game contributing to some of the general sloppiness we see in the first few weeks as the teams try to jel/get dialed in? Watching the highlights there seemed to be a lot of missed cues.

My Rams go into Seattle and administer a beat down.

Nice way to start the season.

Not sure it will continue next week, the Niners look good.

If this is the way the Giants are going to looking in their home opener I might make the 49ers my survivor pick for that Thursday night game. NY looked bad from what I saw.

Anthony Richardson had his ups and downs in his debut - mostly ups though. Colts lost but have every reason to be hopeful for the future if Richardson is developed properly.

Tua scorched the field in LA - nearly 500 passing yards. If he can stay healthy, look out.
