NFL 2017 Season

Honestly, that people talk about that kind of stuff, even jokingly, is part of why the Pats win sometimes. The opposing coaches get so far inside their own heads trying to out-think Bill that they just shit the bed completely.

Ok, let's run it. Wait, he'll know we're going to run, so we should pass. But he'll know that we know that, so maybe run? But knowing that we know that he knows..... What's that, the game ended 30 minutes ago? Oh, shit...

Poor Mayfield. Being crammed into the dysfunctional mess that is the Browns. I feel pretty bad for whichever QB they draft at #1.

Shoved into the factory of sadness to be coached by Hue Jackson and Todd Haley.

We'll see what happens. McDaniels was absolutely given far too much control at far too young an age in Denver, and him believing he could make something out of fuckin' Tebow was proof enough of that.

Although, in a weird way, one almost has to give credit to McDaniels for the Broncos' superbowl appearances and victory. If he hadn't thought Matt Cassel was the next incarnation of Tom Brady, and hadn't given Jay Cutler buttrash with trade talk, Cutler would have remained the QB, Tebow probably wouldn't have happened, and Payton Manning probably wouldn't have come to Denver.

If I was Cleveland, I'd go with Barkley at one, either WR or offensive line at four, and ride with Kizer. Kizer showed flashes of understanding the pro game.

Kizer, Kessler, RGIII, Manziel...

Oh, you sweet summer child...

My Super Bowl Pick:

New England 27-17 Philadelphia

Philly have a tough, tough defense no doubt but I think Brady and McDaniels figure out how to wear them down and unlock them. For all the media keeps trying to portray Pederson's offensive scheme as some nigh-on impossible to defend force, I don't buy it. Belichick and Patricia will make Foles look like what he is.

Game will be somewhat close, Eagles may get a couple of TDs with the running game, but a late Patriots TD will put the game out of reach. Rob Gronkowski will rack up the yards, catch multiple TD passes, and secure Super Bowl MVP.

Who've YOU got?

Pats usually do ok with the tough defense bit, they use the Rocky defense. Other team gets so worn down punching the Pats that by the 4th quarter, they're gassed and then the offense goes to work. It's frustrating to watch, and not good for the blood pressure, but seems to be effective.

That, and the Pats have approximately a gillion RBs/TEs/Slot receivers, so they can do a ton of dump offs/slants/screens to get the ball out quickly if there is pressure.

Really about just getting pressure with only the front 4, and even then, has to be up the middle. If the Eagles can do that, ti'll be a dog fight. if they have to blitz, or the pressure is from the edges, Brady will be just fine.

I'll go 27-24 Pats, as it seems to usually be a FG margin of victory...

My prediction...
Hell, I don't care. I just don't.
So, Patriots because it's the trendy thing to do.... say 24-21 with another late comeback that only a small slice of the NFL fandom enjoy.

Here's some interesting facts.

In slightly over 50% of the 52 Super Bowls, the AFC has been represented by just three teams -
New England (10 times), Pittsburgh (8 times) and Denver (8 times) and the NFC has been represented by just five teams - Dallas (8 times) San Fran (6 times) Green Bay (5 times) Washington (5 times) and Minnesota (4 times).
So eight teams have played in the majority of the Super Bowls, and every Super Bowl played has featured the Patriots, Steelers, Cowboys, Broncos, or 49ers or one of the three following teams - Raiders, Packers, Dolphins, Redskins, or Giants.
17 teams have appeared two or less times, 6 teams have appeared once, and 4 haven't ever been to a Super Bowl, including the aforementioned Cleveland Browns. .

In the past 10 years only 5 different AFC teams have appeared in the Super Bowl, in the past 20 years that expands to 7 different teams, in the past 30 years that expands to 11 different teams, but you have to go back 50+years to add the final 2 teams (sorry Jets and Chiefs fans). So for most of modern NFL history less than half of the AFC has even had a chance to win the Super Bowl. Three AFC teams have never gone (Cleveland, Jacksonville, and Houston)

The NFC is much more egalitarian, with 9 different teams appearing in the last 10 Super Bowls, 12 in the last 20 and 14 in the last 30. The Vikings have been in 4 Super Bowls but all were in the early/mid '70's.
One NFC team (Detroit) has never gone to a Super Bowl.

Thanks, Wikipedia!

More fun stats:

Bill Belichick is participating in his 11th Super Bowl as a coach (head coach or assistant coach). That means he's coached in 21.2% of all Super Bowls. Ever. Goes up to 34.4% of Super Bowls if you start counting when he actually became an assistant coach (DC for the Giants) in 1986.

So since he started in the league, there's been a greater than 1/3rd chance that his team was going to play in the Super Bowl. Nuts.

Or, and a 15.4% (All Super Bowls) or 25% (since he started coaching) that he was going to win the Super Bowl. Since he started coaching, his team has won 25% of all championships....

It's really a historic dominance, and a big reason why the AFC is controlled by three teams, with everyone else fighting for occasional scraps.

Who is the 3rd team? Honestly not seeing another. Pats, Steelers, and...? There have been several teams that have tried to be the next team on the list, but a lot more flash in the pan without staying power. Chiefs are sometimes in there, Broncos were for a moment, Oakland showed something briefly and then fizzled out, Ravens and Chargers were decent occasionally in that span but not consistently. Colts were the big bad until Peyton left, now not a threat. Jags are the new flavor of the month, no idea if that sticks or not...

Over the past 10-15 years, Pats and Steelers are really the only ones that have been there regularly. It's been a 2 horse race, and Pats have dominated the Steelers in that span, so really only 1 horse running since Brady and Belichick got together.

Team 3 is I guess a subjective choice... I was referring to overall historical dominance, over a period of three decades. Only Denver, NE, and Pitt have won championships in each of the past three decades (four, if you go back to 1980).

As for the last ten years its been Colts (once) Ravens (once) Pittsburgh (twice) Denver (twice) and NE (the rest).
So if you exclude Denver from the "three teams" you have to dump Pittsburgh also....

Broncos last win prior to the Manning one was 1999, so 18 years ago. they won 98 and 99 though. They WENT to two recently, but got curb-stomped by the Seahawks in the first one. Baltimore won 2001 and 2013. No one else has more than 1 in that span other than Steelers (06 + 09, plus the loss to the Packers).

I felt Steelers were the obvious/default other team because they were in the playoffs pretty much every year for the past 10-15 (couple missing out of that span, but pretty consistent). No one else really had that kind of run without some real turd seasons mixed in. Baltimore had some bad ones mixed in with their two wins, Steelers were better overall, and more of a 'threat' to the AFC over that span. Most of the time, didn't feel like Ravens were really pushing the league even when their record was decent. Kinda like the Giants on the NFC side. Yeah, they won two (damn them!), but were they a perennial threat? Nope, they sucked out loud more often than they made a decent run. Except for those two years.... *sigh*

By straight up SB wins, I guess that makes Baltimore #3, but really feels like they're more in the pack with anyone that won one, or went to some and lost or whatnot. If you said Broncos over Ravens, can't really argue despite the extra ring. Broncos felt artificially inflated, though, and are already back in cap jail after the Sell Out for Manning plan. Colts were bigger for a longer run, despite their one ring in the period. Second Manning left, the wheels came off, though. It was Pats/Colts/Steelers for the first half of the last 15 years or so, Pats/Steelers/Flavor of the Week for the second half.

This has actually been a fun thing to research, so thank you!

AFC Championship Games appearances in the 10 years:

Jaguars: 1 (0-1)
Jets: 2 (0-2)
Broncos: 2 (2-0)
Colts: 2 (1-1)
Ravens: 3 (1-2)
Steelers 3 (2-1)
Sons of Satan: 6 (4-2)

Cumulative AFC Championship appearances in the last 20 years:

Jaguars:2 (0-2)
Jets: 2 (0-2)
Titans: 2 (1-1)
Raiders: 2 (1-1)
Broncos: 4 (3-1)
Colts: 4 (2-2)
Ravens: 4 (2-2)
Steelers: 6 (3-3)
Cheating Cheaters: 11 (8-3)

So by that metric the Nodes of Evil are the head of the entire class followed at a distance by the Steelers and then we can put the Colts, Ravens, and Broncos in pile and pick one at random (I favor the Broncos as they have the most SB wins).

This isn't helping my Dolphin fan depression.
