You want bullshit? Completely different story, but when Jerry Rice joined the Seahawks, the #80 was already retired because Steve Largent wore it. Jerry Rice didn't even ask for it. The GM told him that Largent wanted him to wear #80, and then the GM told Largent that Rice asked to wear #80.
