New Series?? Report from Deadline

From Star Trek.Com:
The new television series is not related to the upcoming feature film Star Trek Beyond which is scheduled to be distributed by Paramount Pictures in summer 2016.

^^Which as stated above is very vague. It does not state that it will not be set in the same universe as Beyond. It does not state that certain characters from Star Trek Beyond won't be involved (a la a cameo like Bones in "Encounter at Farpoint," Picard in "Emissary," Quark in "Caretaker" and Cochrane is "Broken Bow.") It just states that it's not related.

Very vague. I hope for some clarification to their press release. But I'm not sure we're going to get it for a little while.

Campe: I don't know what universe you live in where the term "not related to" somehow has any ambiguity to it whatsoever, but whatever.

Then read your own quote again. It says that the new series will not be related to Star Trek Beyond specifically. That doesn't mean it won't take place in the nuTrek universe. It just means that its content will not have anything to do with the content of that film.

It's a little vague but the article on startrek.com says:

That could simply mean it won't use the same characters. It doesn't say it's not part of that continuity.

It could be a similar situation to what they're doing with the new "Ash vs. Evil Dead" tv series. The last film in that franchise (the original franchise - for the purpose of this post I'm not including the reboot film that they did a few years ago) was "Army of Darkness", but the people doing the TV series don't have the rights to that film. So in the continuity of the show, the events of "Army of Darkness" DID happen.....they're just not making any direct references to those events whatsoever.

That's easily what they could be doing here. The show will be set in the same universe as the films, there just won't be any direct mention of the events happening in the movies.

I agree "not related to" is actually very ambiguous. It may just simply mean that the third movie is not setting up the new tv show. Or it could mean that it's the old continuity, or an entirely new continuity.

If I had to guess right now, I'd say our best bet is that CBS is going to do what it's currently doing with Limitless. Same universe, but completely different show. Occasional guest appearances from some of the bigger movie actors.

I agree.

It could mean something along the lines of The Avengers/Marvel Cinema Universe and The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The movies are Captain Kirk & Company out there doing things...while the TV show is Starfleet Academy/random Star base/Section 31/palace intrigue on the Klingon homeworld or whatever set in the 'same' timeline.

Just coming to this now. I'm surprised, but will await with interest.

I'm always surprised when people question the veracity of Deadline though. That made me laugh, reading the first few posts. Deadline is one of maybe 3 rock-solid sources out there other than a network or studio. If they say it, it's true.

GREAT news!

Also happy to see Dennis Russell Bailey was wrong. He claimed people like Paramobius were wrong and CBS wasn't working on a new TV series. He said there probably would never be a Star Trek TV series.

:guffaw:

^And yet, I think the general thought was that people didn't believe they would do a PRIME TV series. Of which we have no details of what this is except for that it's "not related to Star Trek Beyond" which most of us believe is very vague to its meaning. I think the majority of us, Dennis included, believed Trek would return to the small screen eventually. I would stand to reason we're all a little surprised, Para Mobius included (because reasons I'm not biting on), that the announcement came today.

I don't care what it is... Prime universe or not. I love stuff like Lost, Alias, Felicity, Person of Interest, Almost Human and Fringe. It will be great.

The biggest surprise for me is that there is a new Trek series that's apparently just over a year away from premiering, and we are just hearing about it NOW.

I mean, for a Star Trek series, if they want it to start in 14 months, it has to already be in some stage of development, right? I can't believe they've managed to completely keep a lid on it.

They're still looking for writers. There is no casting nor any production work done. I think you're assuming it takes longer than it really does. Sounds like all there is right now is a deal between CBS Studios, CBS All Access, and Kurtzman.

I would hope this means at the very least there was a pitch from Kurtzman out there that led them to this, as opposed to CBS telling Kurtzman: "We want a new Trek series for CBS All Access. Come up with something."

I'm sure there is some sort of idea for the series and the pilot as well.

I do wonder if CBS has made an agreement with Paramount about the movie universe. If not, it will probably be a prime universe... Or can CBS do what they want?

That's the question. CBS owns Star Trek, lock, stock and barrel. They license Paramount and Bad Robot to make the movies. I would think they can do what they want but there were some issues with the TV rights that were mentioned by the people at Skydance awhile ago. I would stand to believe that Kurtzman's involvement means they're sticking in the Abramsverse. But Bad Robot isn't announced in the production, so who knows at this point?

(ETA: I'm not going to CBS won't do it BUT I would be hard-pressed to believe they would return to the prime universe. There's a lot more money and a lot more interest in the Abramsverse. Again though, at this point? Who knows?)
