We need more Short Treks

A Trek anthology series is a great idea. A great way to experiment with new concepts and stories, without commiting to a full feature film like S31 attempted. Kurtzman has talked about an anthology Trek.

Short Treks was pretty much just this. The initial four were spin offs of Discovery, but later instalments widened the scope. Some were proof of concepts for what became SNW, Lower Decks, and Prodigy. Another set up Picard.

I know COVID killed the Short Treks from happening, but i definitely wish they would continue. I want more.

I don't think COVID stopped the Short Treks, I think they stop doing the Short Treks because they served their purpose. The whole point of them was to keep people who only subscribed to CBS All Access for Star Trek for the nearly a year in between seasons of Star Trek Discovery. Once multiple shows were off the ground, that was no longer necessary.

That said, more long Treks like Section 31, only better. They don't necessarily have to be movie length either. Episode length would be enough to tell a complete story, and even introduce a new character or concept to the universe. Look at Marvel's Werewolf by Night as an example.

There was a third season of Short Treks written and due to be filmed in May 2020 until the pandemic happened and put that to a crashing halt. These days, I suspect the general uncertainty of the streaming world is preventing more Short Treks from happening.
I'd love to hear what stories they had planned or considered. The only one I know about was an idea for one where Cadet Picard met Admiral Uhura, which never happened but somehow begat the entire Picard series.

The problem with anthology-style Short Treks is that every time period now pretty much looks the same, so what’s the point?

I personally don’t think we are getting any more Short Treks.
you have a good point. Despite being in different eras, SNW, Picard, Disco, and S31 don't look that visually distinct from each other

Strange New Worlds looks nothing like Picard. Same can be said of Discovery. S31 didn't look like much of anything as they weren't really around anything familiar.

The PIC aesthetic was a mixture of DSC and the TNG films.

Definitely short treks could be a great way to give viewers a window into many different parts of the world & give the creators a chance to beta-test some concepts for potential shows or movies. We desperately need a well performing movie

SNW was cancelled. The only show currently being produced is SFA, and its longevity after season 2 is in doubt, thanks to the regime change. And I'm pretty sure Short Treks are a thing of the past, and that they will not be replaced by TV movies thanks to the dismal showing of Section 31.

All the more reason why something like short treks would help the franchise. Clearly the creators are struggling (as they always have) in figuring out how to appeal to fans. They could test out so many ideas with short treks to see what fans want and maybe breathe some new life into the franchise.
