Starfleet is nostalgic for its heyday. Then Discovery showed up and 32nd Century hipsters saw the real deal. So they keep the uniforms to be "retro-cool" but had a new badge/communicator so they'd still have the latest tech. The fact that the Disco Uniform is a deeper cut old-school uniform than the TOS Uniform probably gave it extra points with an organization that has this mentality.
It's like someone today who loves 45s and listens to songs that don't get played on the radio but still uses a cell phone.
Will be interesting when we'll get a clear look and see who's less wrong.

I'm thinking the bottom section bulges very outward or inwards based on the reflection on Saru's badge. Burnham's looks like it has more swirly things. Very strange if they're different from each other.

I suspect there's more than a slight dome to the surface of the badge overall that I'm just not able to show well in these quick sketches.
You may well be right about the center line rather than the recess on the (wearer's) left of the delta near the "pips," as I currently have it.

Burnham’s definitely looks like it has more detailing under the affowhead than Saru’s, at least to me.
I suspect some parts of the background ellipse are polished and the delta has a frosted / brushed finish. I suspect some of what we’re seeing on Burnham’s badge in that shot is simply reflections.
For what it’s worth, I still don’t particularly care for these badges. There might be some clever in-universe explanation (for the shape, not just the new badges generally) but I think it’s nothing more than a “hey, this looks cool” design exercise.
I understand the desire to make an aesthetic change and to do at least *something* to the main costumes as part of a soft re-boot but I don’t like this design. From anything further than a foot away, all you can see is a metal ellipse. It’s lost all definition and significance.

Yeah, I don't really care for these new combadges myself. It's probably my least favorite iteration of the Starfleet insignia because the arrowhead is an element of the design, but not the main one. And what good is rank insignia if you can only see it if you get within someone's personal space?
I get too many Bajoran ComBadge vibes from this new design.

It’s good to see Saru properly in the captain’s uniform and Burnham back in gold (presumably as XO...?).
It’s not a small undertaking for an actor to have a lead role that requires all those prosthetic elements every time but the show is long overdue an obviously non-human Captain as a main character. I like Saru.

I agree but they are bringing back the 1940's US Army dress browns, so nostalgia can be a factor.

The first non-Human Captain as a Main Cast member is something we sorely need.
How many non-human Captains have we ever seen? There was Captain Rixx from TNG S1 Conspiracy. There was Captain Solok from DS9.
