New Flu Virus SPREADS!

No confirmed cases in Oregon yet, but we have a couple of suspected cases. One is a student at Western Oregon, so they decided to close the university until Tuesday to be safe.

My problem isn't that they didn't close down classes, it's that they closed down fun activities (a concert yesterday and a bus ride and tickets to a baseball game tonight). There's an odd mix of hypochondria and hypocrisy going on.

They canceled a trip to a baseball game! That's un-American!!!!

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Jesus Fucking Christ (Superstar!) this whole thing is so incredibly stupid!

WHO says confirmed flu cases total 331, 10 deaths
04:40 AM EDT
GENEVA (Reuters) - The World Health Organization said on Friday that as of 0600 GMT the number of officially confirmed cases of a new flu sweeping around the world was 331 in 11 countries, including 10 deaths.
The figures for what the WHO calls influenza A (H1N1), widely known as swine flu, include 109 confirmed cases with one death in the United States and 156 confirmed cases with nine deaths in Mexico, it said in a statement on its website.
Other countries with laboratory-confirmed cases are Austria (1), Canada (34), Germany (3), Israel (2), Netherlands (1), New Zealand (3), Spain (13), Switzerland (1) and United Kingdom (8).
Other estimates of infection are higher. For instance Mexico says up to 176 people have died there and the authorities have confirmed 12 deaths.

Please don't tell me that you don't think the information from Mexico is suspect.

I like how the number of dead from pig flu in Mexico went from 180ish to... 12. So 13 people have died from the flu worldwide! Wow!!! As someone pointed out earlier they go "There are ____ cases..." and then whisper... "all of which are mild".

Now there is world that the earliest case came from CA. In 6 months it will come out that it's a fucking flu bug and that's it!

There might be 7 cases at a college about 25 miles away!!! I'm going to die! Thankfully the school is still open.

From someone on another forum who lives in Oregon:

Major Woody said:
Came home from work yesterday to find a message on the home phone. Robo-call from the school district to advise me that now that there has been one single confirmed case of the flu in our entire county, that so far there have been none in the district and we should tell our kids to sneeze into a tissue, wash their hands frequently etc etc etc and that the schools were safe.

Jesus.

I got an email from the church telling me not to carry a Bible as it can't be cleaned between visits. And to consider not using a common chalice for communion (I don't anyway).

It was actually rather more use than the email I got from the NHS.

Hopefully this'll repeat 1918 and die down till November - by which time we'll be ready with a vaccine and it will be no more severe than Usual Flu.

My neighbor's 38 year old son is a long distance trucker who frequently delivers to border towns along the Texas/Mexico border. Last week he had a case of flu that came on like a freight train. All of a sudden he was sick as a dog. High fever, vomiting, diarrhea for four days. Had to go to the hospital to get rehydrated. He's asthmatic, too.

This week, he's fine. He's back at work. If this was swine flu, it's sure not that dangerous. If it can't even kill an asthmatic and bring on pneumonia it hasn't got a lot of kick.

My girlfriend works PR for a school district. She's getting calls all day long from parents and press asking stupid "what are you prepared to do" questions.

I'm open to hearing daily stats and reports from the news. It's good to stay informed. But the media feeds off the fear of the masses.

latest news alert from CNN: "Flight diverted to Boston with passenger that may have flu". This is getting a little stupid.

While I decided I'm not shaking hands in church anymore, this whole thing from the media feels like it's gotten out of hand. I was in the dental office the other day and this was pretty much the only thing being talked about. It's wild.

Talk about stupid, my boss just asked me to get him 5 Million of those paper masks, that's not a joke either, he plans on selling most of them down in Mexico and keeping a serious supply around for all his employees.

No kidding, the regular stores around here have a hard time keeping them in stock, how am I going to get him 5 million?!?!?
