New Doctor to be revealed on Sunday

I would enjoy a female Doctor, or a non-white Doctor, provided that he or she were perfect for the role, but my preferences aren't the only ones to consider. The Beeb has a very large audience to consider and, while I'm a bit disappointed that the Beeb didn't make a braver casting decision, they made a good choice to go with a more mature actor and someone with acting chops for the role! :)

I hope you did not get my point backwards. :)

I was referring to the fact that probably more than half of the present audience of the show have never seen themselves as the Doctor, unlike lucky people like me. The popular choice is not always that inclusive. "Everyone" is not the same thing as "most".

But some of the companions have been more than awesome in that regard, so I don't say that as a complaint either. Just that a woman Doctor will be a nice thing to see regardless of my selfish enjoyment of such casting.

I agree in terms of demographics and think we're actually on common ground here in that, despite my own dislikes or likes, there's a lot of potential enjoyment in Doctor Who. I'm willing to put my own preconceptions on hold and just see what develops. It may be that I'll see something outside of my preferences that still genuinely is appealing and fun to watch.

I'm willing to see what develops.

I was in the camp that wanted to see a woman...or at least a black actor in the role

I'd be more accepting of that angle if this wasn't the attitude. Cast the best person possible and that person just happens to be a woman or black? Alright, sure. It's possible.

Cast somebody simply because they're a woman or black? Reeks of "Right on!" political correctness.

Well no, I don't want them to cast someone just because they are black or a woman...obviously it should also be someone who would be amazing in the role!

(Plus, remember, right now there is the opposite opinion by many - that if it's a woman, they will "stop watching", "never watch again"...etc. And that's just as...biased.)

I just would like them to consider the role open for women and "ethnic" actors. And I was kinda *hoping* that we would see a woman or a black actor in the role this time...just to shake the formula up a bit.

Eh, I don't think it's would be wrong for the producers to specifically *want* - or to seek out - someone of a particular skin color and/or gender...after all, producers & directors do that ALL THE TIME. In fact, take "Star Trek: Voyager", for example...the captain was going to be played specifically* by a woman. Though I hear that there were also male actors considered, just that they seemed to prefer a female in the role.

But, of course, I want to BEST actor for the role. (And I suspect that is what we may have gotten...because hints are that the auditioned and/or considered some women, etc...)

And nor would I NEVER want the Doctor to be played by a white male actor ever again. *I* am a white male myself! I just would like to see more...diversity...in the actors cast.

And I am happy that we are, maybe for the first time since the 3rd Doctor (or maybe the 7th - how old was Sylvester McCoy when he was cast) that we are getting an older actor again. And I applaud that!

Thank christ they didn't pick a woman.

You know I wasn't remotely interested in this whole debate but this attitude is seriously beginning to get up my nose. What you're saying is half of the acting professionals in the UK, no matter how consummate their performing skill, will be unable to perform in this role because of their gender.
No, it's the "too different" thing. Upsetting the apple cart. People are afraid of the unfamiliar.

A female Doctor would've been brilliant, but Moffat has to leave before it happens. Otherwise we'll get River Song Redux.

It's got nothing to do with female acting ability, sexism or being too different.

It's to do with the fact that THE DOCTOR IS A MAN.

When the time comes for Peter to leave, do you think this is the advice he'll give his successor:

*(Now time for all the younger, post-2005 fans on the internet to piss and bitch and moan that the new actor is "Ewww!!! Too old!!!")
Don't lump us all in together, please. I'm a post-2005 fan and I think he's brilliant.

Sorry, you are right. I was mostly thinking of all the newer and *teenage* fans (especially in the US)...but yeah, I shouldn't have said "all."

That being said, I DO expect that it's going to be a coming complaint among many younger, newer fans. (Who are only used to a younger, and "sexier" - to them - Doctor. Not one with, of all things, *gray hair*!!!)

Well no doubt about it. He's got the intensity and looks a bit like Tom Baker.

No, it's a ALIEN (or 1/2 alien, at least...depending in whom you ask...) And an alien who's species can and *do* change sex.

(Really, he/she/it is whatever the current writers say that he/she/it is, LOL.)

Except, Capaldi's almost exclusively known for saying fuck and cunt. That's his big famous role. You look him up and that'll be the main thing.

So?
So a kid's like "Who's this new Doctor?" and then they look him up, they'll find him yelling the words fuck and cunt copiously.

OFFS... If we'd had the net in 74 they'd have found a clip pf Tom Baker's cock. Still think he was a good choice

You do have to do a bit of searching to find that though. It's not the first thing that comes up when you Google his name or put it into YouTube. If Twitter was around, Tom Baker's nob wouldn't have been trending.

I'm American too, y'know.

But you're right about the kind of fans you're speaking of. I have a few friends (mid-20's women though) that have already started to complain about how old Capaldi is.
