There's also the issue of fixed-term contracts. When Eccleston signed up, nobody knew if the show would be a hit or would die a quick death. So he may not have been contracted for multiple series. I'd be surprised if Capaldi isn't obliged to do a certain amount of series.

Jeez what a whiny bitch. Its a tv show, theres always going to be a certain level of celebrity silliness. But its easy enough to avoid if you just stay away from the tabloids and Entertainment Tonight.
I can't say I particularly liked the cheesey format of the Special ( I preferred the one they did for Matt) but its still better than the old days, when we'd get a photo and a quick news story on the nightly news.

In hindsight, I guess they couldn't have redone this format. Another retrospective of all the Doctors would have been repetative, and Doctor Who Confidential is long gone.

The 12th doctor announcement reminded me of how invested some of the U.K programming is to big announcment/competition type shows.

Precisely. It felt natural the way they introduced Matt Smith because Doctor Who Confidential was the obvious medium to do it in. But with Confidential gone, Capaldi's announcement felt far more gimmicky.
