My Gripes with STID!

That scene actually makes me appreciate the new design more than ever. It somehow looks better surrounded by terrestrial elements than it does hanging in empty space.

So the design works because it fails?
That's not even a half-decent effort at setting up a straw man in response to The Keeper's post. It's plain drive-by snark, adding nothing to the discussion, and you know you've been asked on quite a few occasions not to do that.

Please do better.

I think the visuals that have been set up by Abrams have been, so far, stunning. I'm not saying that I like everything, but STID had two great scenes in that movie that gavwe me goose bumps; those scenes where the Enterprise rose from the water, and from the cloud deck. I'm just hoping that Orci can keep the momentum that Abrams-Trek currently possesses.

Yes. There are bright lights, lots of computer screens, and smug know-it-alls in blue shirts walking around and getting in your business.

Somehow, this calls to mind the scene in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, where Cap and Black Widow are using a store computer to get classified information, and "I've been Aaron" shows up to offer assistance. :guffaw:

I hadn't heard that one. You mean to tell me the bridge looks like an apple store?!

No, not an Apple store, more like it's there to look pretty but have very little real functionality, and distract you from it by having plenty of pretty graphics that also do nothing. TOS I understand as a product of its time, but the motion picture bridges seemed more functional to me than this new bridge.

In what way? All have buttons and screens.

So, you're saying Apple Products are there to look pretty but have very little real functionality, and distract you from it by having plenty of pretty graphics that also do nothing?

They are, essentially the same damned layout. The only difference is that the Abrams bridge is more of an oval with extra stations and access to a deck. Which makes sense, since it is the command center for the whole damned starship.

I don't think people honestly know why they dislike things. They just throw things out there and hope no one questions it.

I might have added a bit more color to the bridge. But as far as layout goes, they hit the ball out of the park.

I can't believe someone is arguing functionality of two versions of a fake spaceship! :scream:

Well duh, bridges of Starships must look like the recycled contents of a 1960's or 1980's garage sale and be inadequately lit at all times, functionality be damned. :p

I've said before that the one in the Mall of America is a step above the usual Apple store. It's pretty amazing and (somewhat) like the Enterprise bridge. Of course, I haven't been in there going on 12 years now, so I could be totally different. This was when the iPods were the new big thing and there were no pones are pads. But it's design function was definitely aim more towards display and dazzle than actually selling stuff.

It was also very bright.

Alright. I believe the point that the Enterprise looks good in terrestrial elements than in empty space reflects this era's attitude towards Space in Star Trek. Nobody is really interested in being in Space anymore in Star Trek and the newly designed Enterprise kind of reflects that. JJ told Industrial Light and Magic to make the Enterprise look like a Hot Rod car that's built entirely on Earth. Of course something like that would look good in a terrestrial environment rather than in space. Keeper is not wrong. The Enterprise does look good in those shots, and that's my problem. It's like space was an obstacle the film makers kept trying to come up with ways not to have the movies set in. Why else would three major set pieces take place on Earth of all places?

If you can't make your ship look good in Space compared to being in a terrestrial environment, that's a failure in my book. Especially when you're dealing with a science fiction staple like the Enterprise.

I don't see any similarity. Wait, I see something ... THERE IT IS! :rommie:

There she is. There she is.

Sorry, couldn't resist ;)

As for the Enterprise design, the only aspect that I don't like is the nacelles. I think they are a little bit too big. Beyond that, still one of my favorite moments is in Trek 09 when Bones and Kirk see the Enterprise for the first time. The whiteness of the model works for me against the backdrop of space.
