My Gripes with STID!

I think the new Enterprise looks fantastic in space.

Indeed; while I'm lukewarm about the reboot, it does have some dang majestic space scenes. My favorite is probably the scene where the Enterprise warps in and rescues the Jellyfish from the Narada's barrage of torpedoes; a true "Here comes the cavalry!" scene, made even more memorable by Giacchino's masterful score.

...and while I'm not sure how I feel about hiding the Enterprise underwater, the shot of it rising out of it was pretty goshdarn spectacular.

I think the new Enterprise is gorgeous. And my favorite shots are when she's rising above the asteroids in ST09, and above the clouds in STID.

It's as if she's saying: I'm back. Who's effing next?! :)

This new Enterprise is amazing looking and my favorite ship design.

Not too surprising since both Trek09 and STID are essentially the same movie that the same kind of shot would be replicated. It's just a pity that after those shots, the Enterprise isn't that involved with the action anymore, STID especially. It's all a set up for some action scene where people punch/shoot other people.

You want a shot of the Enterprising rising from something that is not only a cool looking shot, but is itself a set-up for what the Enterprise is about to do, try this one out.

The nuTrek films are visually spectacular, with a "wow" factor that was sorely missing in Trek films, particularly since TWOK.

A fair point, though I do like the broadsiding of the Enterprise by the Vengeance. Felt very TWOK to me.

Also, to be perfectly fair, Abrams Trek gets enough grief for ripping off past Trek films. Just saying.

Space was a wonderful thing when I was growing up. I was four when Neil Armstrong stepped on the moon. We all thought of becoming astronauts. It was in the same vicinity of being a star NFL quarterback; at least at that time it was.

It's a different world today. Most people are completely unaware of a space launch and polls show that many, if not most, would rather the Government spend their hard-earned tax dollars on something more tangible. Space exploration is an afterthought. People are no longer interested in beautiful shots of beautiful imaginary starships that last 10, 5 or even 1 minute. A sequence like the one where Kirk was approaching the Enterprise in Star Trek: The Motion Picture would have people squirming in their seats today. It's unproductive time in today's movie industry, where more is better. Action sequences with choreographed fights are exciting. Space just isn't....

If Abrams aimed Star Trek at avid Star Trek fans alone, there never would be another ST movie. There just aren't enough of us to bring in the big supporting dollars they need to make these risky investments. They have to aim it at the general movie fan, who enjoys the action sequences. Does it dilute what we love? Of course it does, to a degree. But the money follows the audience. Always has, and always will.

I just want more Gorn. That's all. :p

-iBridge by Apple

I hadn't heard that one. You mean to tell me the bridge looks like an apple store?!

No, not an Apple store, more like it's there to look pretty but have very little real functionality, and distract you from it by having plenty of pretty graphics that also do nothing.

Whooosh!

TOS I understand as a product of its time, but the motion picture bridges seemed more functional to me than this new bridge.

Not for a moment.

Yup, it's been one of the more exciting and welcome aspects of the movies. And I'm definitely enjoying the thought we have at least one more movie to bring those epic space shots in again.

I have a favorite visual moment in STID: the point where the Enterprise is attached and disabled at warp. We never saw anything like that as they did it and it looks damned amazing. The whole point from "I'm getting a reading I don't understand" to the 1701 spinning into normal space is just breathtaking.

I cannot fault the effects in either film in the slightest. Everything looks totally real. Just very well done all around. I hope the speed in which Trek 3 is being made doesn't have an effect on that realism (unless they always had such a short time from shooting to release).

The bit I wish they kept from the 2009 film was the "condensation" on the camera in the exterior shots. That was such a nice touch.

I loved that scene too - on the big screen on opening night, the noise the Vengeance made sounded absolutely awesome - so alien and other worldly. I just wish the scene went on for longer and the Enterprise got a couple of shots back before being overwhelmed, it just seemed to be over too quickly.

It rather appropriately sounded very similar to one of the Nazi Vengeance Weapons, the V-1 Flying Bomb. I thought that was cool of them to do.

Not to digress, but geez, the last three Star Trek films have drifted toward making the Enterprise seem puny, unarmed and nearly defenseless. I know it's not a Klingon Negh-var class battlecruiser or anything but it seems that the Enterprise has become the little kid on the block for which all of the bullies are looking. I guess that goes along with the fact that Kirk doesn't win fights in Abrams-Trek either. That's why we need to bring back Gorn. -Just sayin'...

Totally agree - I want to see the Enterprise dish it out a bit in the next film, it's supposed to be the Federation flagship. Even if it's a cat and mouse encounter like TWOK. Or even a good battle like Nemesis where you can see really see what the big E is capable of, even if the opponent is bigger and stronger. Give me a good, exciting space battle. Enough of the 10 second sequences of my favourite ship getting a hiding please.

To be fair, so far the Enterprise has faced an enormously mutated 24th century vessel flown by a madman, and a designed-to-be-a-juggernaut battleship captained by a corrupt admiral with nothing to lose.

Kinda gonna take a beating in those circumstances.

Oh, I understand that they've faced some large and imposing ships (I was including the 'Predator' flown by Remus in Star Trek: Nemesis). I'm just saying that it seems to have become yet another convenience device that the Enterprise faces a much larger, heavily armed and superior ship that threatens to destroy the Enterprise. The Enterprise is supposed to be a Corvette, not a Prius. If they do it in this next movie, I'm writing a stern letter to Paramount. :guffaw:

I wrote to Paramount after each movie telling them I'll never watch another one.

To the topic but unrelated to the above comment:

Lens flare must have been mentioned in this thread by now. It's my gripe because I loathe mindless habit, and trying to pass off what was once a sign of amateurish work as now being somehow artful is dumb. Puh-lease. Emperor's clothes.

That's really cool, Locutus. Thanks for that.
