My first impression of Bakula was seeing him as a gay man

in American Beauty. Did anyone else had the same?

I lisnened to the commentary in the first episode and they went "fans knew Bakula", and for some reason I didn't think he meant they knew him as a gay man in American Beauty.
Fantastic movie btw.

He was the star of Quantum Leap. That's what they meant.

Actually when I watched American Beauty again my jaw dropped, because I didn't remember Bakula's role in that. I guess that goes for most people... I connected him to Quantum Leap, but not that minor role in American Beauty.

The mind is selective all right.

I didn't even recognize him in AB. I had to watch it again after I found out during ENT that he was in AB. it was such a small role, it kinda escaped my notice. I love QL though I didn't watch it regularly. I thought he was fantastic in it -- a really well-rounded role.

As great as AB was, it was before its time. Alan Ball wrote and filmed all the other families on more of an equal level to show that the only 'normal' family in the area was the gay one. Pressure from the studio had them cut most of the 'gay' couple's scenes. Scott's described some of the missing ones at various encounters and it sounds like it would have been great had they remained.

You'll note that there are no extra/deleted scenes on the DVD, either, something most of us were so disappointed to learn. Ball decided to just leave the finished product alone.

Too bad....while Scott and Sam Robards roles ended up being small, they apparently started out much juicier.

^ interesting stuff.

and I suppose leaving the deleted scenes would make it obvious they were trying to be politically correct on 'gay related sensitivity of the average person'.

That's funny. Yeah, Scott has been in a lot of films, including Life as a House (with one of my favs -- Kevin Klein) and an upcoming one with Matt Damon as what looks like the secondary character (supporting actor). He's also been in Murphy Brown and a few other guest roles on television. Seems like he's had a pretty wide and various career even as a young guy.

I'm pretty sure I remember reading and/or hearing Scott say on a number of occasions that he's gone out of his way to try to do a wide variety of things in a wide variety of mediums. He's also said that he considers himself fortunate to have had (and still have) the opportunity to do just that.

Must admit, I'd forgotten about that. Chris Cooper was absolutely stunning in that film, so I supose there's no shame in being overshadowed by him.

Otherwise, the film is somewhat overrated. After my English lit class watched that plastic bag scene for the fourth time, there was a mini-riot...

they misunderstood it. it's not the plastic bag scene but that EVEN a plastic bag scene can be thought as beautiful at the right frame of mind.

it could be argued that the FACT that the plastic bag scene was crap makes it even more important that the concept is kept.

if anything, a class should be discussing how terrible that scene is, what a complete waste of time, what an insult of intelligence and art.

so let's watch it for a fifth time..

It's funny-I never saw a minute of Quantum Leap and forgot he was in AB, so I had a fresh take on Bakula. It was good to see him with no mental baggage. I have seen QL a few times since ENT aired and did not care for it, so it worked out for me in the long run.

^^ Beckett and Archer are so diametrically different, even in appearance, that seeing one has no effect on watching the other (edited to add) for me.

~~I can only speak for myself.~~

I guess that I need to watch these other films.:confused:

I have Lord of Illusions and Necessary Roughness in my Scott Bakula collection. Along with Quantum Leap (original music, of course--gotta have the original music). :)

Am I the only one who assumed that Archer was seduced by that Nissian Captain in Cogenitor? 3 days in a bathysphere the size of station wagon? Toilet and bathing aside, they'd be hard pressed not to be on top of one another every second of the day.

Come now, we can get better slash ideas than that!
Think Desert Crossing.

What? That they'd never die of thirst if they just 69ed their cares away creating a self contain biopshere as their waters just circuited and circuited form one to other in some sort of circle of life?

I was serious about cogenitor, Archers complete attitude when he got home only makes sense if he was smitten with G'kar and felt deference like some sort of toyboy to the elder Captains experience that they could disagree with out raising voices.
